Years ago I bought a boxed set of Omikron and played it through. One thing that bugged me is that the hand to hand fights did not seem to have any particular strategy to them. Sometimes the AI opponent would block absolutely everything, no matter what moves I tried (expect for the close-up grapple attacks), and at other times everything went through, like there was some switch that got toggled at random. So far my experiences with the GOG release are not any different.

Back then I didn't find any place to discuss the game, so now I am asking you lovely people here: Has anyone found any actual strategies that help with the fights, or is it just as effective to randomly pound the attack buttons?

Playing on a keyboard, use the up key on your keypad to make an iinitial run at your opponent. Then just before you collide, rapid use of A, S, and the space bar will unleash a good kick attack. Holding down A&S while repeatedly popping the space bar will usually cause a flying kick attack that, once it starts causing red damage instead of blue, can be repeated until the match is won.

While manipulating A,S,W, and the space bar, be sure to let your right hand stay busy on the keypad directional keys during general fighting. I get the most pleasure out of taking female characters and training them up to grand masters and winning the fight match with them. It's the greater challenge. That said, female upper body strength is less than that of the males, so I don't do a lot of grappling or hand punches with the females. But I use a lot of kicks.

If necessary, remap your keypad directional keys so they will take on the dodge functions.

Hope these tips help.

Yup, that's the same thing that one me most of the fights, too: as soon as a fight begins, run towards the enemy and send him to the ground with a slide-kick. This way you come out swinging and it works every time.
