Hi all,

I was wondering if there is any way of leveling up your character (except for the fighting-title) through fighting?
I'm having a lot of trouble landing hits on enemies and I can't even begin to try to use combo's.

I usually win by cheesing the low-kick as soon as I get a lucky take-down, which seems to defeat the entire purpose of the fighting system...

I know there are other characters available later in game, but I was wondering how far I can push my character.
I read in one walkthrough that there is a way of leveling up statistics, but I haven't notice any difference in stats for a while now :)

- Thanks
The fighting contest is the best way. Then there is the training guy at the rebel base. The trainer in your apartment is the other way.

Can you level up your stats as high as you want, or do you stop improving stats after you hit the highest fighting rank?
Kay'l seems to be pretty sh*t at fighting and I reached the highest fighting rank after losing (!) 3 or 4 rounds in the training sim on difficult, but I don't see any improvement...

The highest level is what ... Taar Master? Once your character is Taar Master, it can't go any higher. You'd need to inhabit a new character and start over as a novice to do any more fight leveling.

Thanks! I'm loving this game but the hand to hand fighting is awful. I seem to win or lose randomly depending if my hits actually land. I've done the arena fighting a few times; sometimes I end up winning everything easily and sometimes I'm beat to a pulp by the first guy...

As you progress in the game, you will have access to potions that can accelerate your fight leveling, your resistance to damage and your attack strength. As soon as you can, tip the beggar near the supermarket, give him a life potion, and he'll give you access to some great stuff at the Wiki Garden near the temple.
You can also find some very good bodies to inhabit with great stats. Later on it may be worth hunting for a better body before you head out for the final stretch.

With the fighting contest it may be worth losing to the final opponent on purpose. Once you win all fights the contest shuts down. If you lose on the last fight though you can repeat the previous ones as often as you want.
It's frustrating. Sometimes you'll pummel a strong opponent with ease, and sometimes even an easy opponent will stunlock you and beat you to death relentlessly. Many times opponents just block and you can't hurt them, and then launch a ferocious counter-attack that drains your health before you even realise what's happening. I wonder, why isn't there a block button that I can use, just like my enemies? Or does the automatic blocking probability depend on the dodge skill?

I think it depends on stance and stats. The problem is that enemies will adjust their stance accordingly much faster than your character can change stance.

I've given up on beating enemies fair, so I just dunk down potions and try it with souped up stats.
Fighting is really stupid in this game.
As well as shoot outs.
And I so wish the adventuring controls were different too, but I understand that this is an old game...
I just changed character (some bad ass dude who likes poetry) and I get absolutely trampled in the illegal arena. Is there some way of training for this? I'm not kay'l anymore and his apartement disappeared from the map so I can't use his trainer. The training areas in the gun shops are for FPS-combat only, it seems.

Even after losing 3,4 battles I am still not leveling up in skill...

There is a live trainer at the rebel hideout. Have you been there yet? Fighting isn't that hard when you know keystrokes for sliding, grappling, and kick-boxing. It sounds like that's what holding you back. Without potions, the arena is really your best way to level up.

I enjoy inhabiting the female characters, and training them up, despite their initial weaknesses, into badass killers. I do it all at the arena. The puniest is the receptionist at the morgue. My favorite is the blond at the bookstore nearest the temple.

I would really like to see the code of the fighting mode because I have my doubts that your stats really matter except for health/energy, obviously. Most of the female characters you can reincarnate to seem to have pretty weak stats but I was surprised that I didn't notice any obvious difference in difficulty during fights. Leveling up to master in the simulator in your apartment is easy and seems to help somewhat. You even level up if you lose the fights.

However, "master" level is really a joke because even after winning the tournament, I often lost against the very first opponent during the next tournament.

Two things that helped me during fights: Try to "draw first blood" by attacking even before the fight has actually begun. From there on, you'll win most of the time if you just keep on attacking. The other thing is, learning at least one good combo. The one that worked for me almost always is the flying kick (salto), just jump and press both kick buttons.

It seems my fingers get quickly tired during multiple fights, so the timing isn't correct anymore. After a pause or on the next day, fighting is much easier again.

By the way, there are two books about fighting available from the book store near Kay'l's apartment and one lists several combos with button mappings.

In my opinion, the biggest flaw of the fight mode is the missing blocking. I'm not much of a fighting game player but usually all of them have a block button and using that is what makes the difference between a button smashing novice and a sophiscated player. I mean, your opponents can block and they even do this excessively. So why can't your character? That seems pretty dumb. Maybe they remove it last minute because it made the fights too easy?

Also, the fights are a bit too quick for my taste. Or rather, why can't I use the simulator to train combos without an opponent or a passive one? There's never enough time to try a combo. Basically, that's why I stick to the single one that I get working (most of the time). After A LOT of fighting you might have a chance to try other combos without getting your ass kicked within seconds.

It's Grand Master of TAAR the best way is in Kay'ls apartment! the only way is by doing all the special grabs and combo's and the special kicks!

to do a special gran its sidestep left and a punch or kick button to do special kicks it's sidestep right and kick buttons but not punch buttons for some Odd reason to do combos just mash the buttons!
