Purchased this right after I saw it on GOG's front page, even wrote a posthaste review while doing a "happy dance" on my chair but unfortunately, just after the first dialogue with Kay'l and he jumps into the portal thingy, I keep getting a BSOD. Uninstalled and reinstalled, tried several compatibility modes, no good.

I'm sure there's a solution but it's a bit disappointing, I was so pumped to play this after long time, especially after reading your posts about the fixed inventory and map screens.

On modern windows, a bsod is generally a driver issue or flaky hardware. What's the error code?

Something to do with "PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA" and "cmudaxp.sys" according to the dump. I looked those up on Google and apparently this particular BSOD has something to do with faulty RAM or audio drivers. I'm positive that my RAM sticks are fine, so I assumed the problem was some sort of incompatibility between Omikron's GOG version and my audio drivers. So here's what I did:

I uninstalled the audio drivers (I use an ASUS Xonar DG) then I tried launching Omikron to test it and it worked fine, no BSOD, it was playable (without sound, obviously).

Then I downloaded and installed the audio driver's newest version from the ASUS website, and the BSOD problem is back. Guess I'm temporarily reverting to onboard audio to be able to play Omikron, at least for now. :)

edit: The game works fine now with my Realtek onboard, as well as my cheap Creative USB card. I'm sure it was an ASUS Xonar thing.

Happy gaming everyone.

As far as i know ASUS Xonar always have one bugged driver. Even foobar2000 developer decided at one point before it's not worth for his time to release newer version of Asio plug-in just to fix Xonar compatibility issue. It's incompatible with several obscure and old software / program.

Yay, glad you managed to fix it. :)

hauna: * When you enter a building, like a shop, and you activate the door, you should be able to see "inside" the building, but instead you see a weird mix of interior and outside graphics. Seems like a streaming/loading problem?

* Outside, in the distance, you should not see solid blue fog

* In police HQ, the fog is meant to be greenish, but there's lots of blue... fog. Which shouldn't be there.
Having these same three problems.

I double-checked these points on a completely different system and they were there, too.
Qualisar looks especially bad with that big-ass bright blue wall in front of you. It's like Sonic will speed around the corner any minute : )
Is the map laggy?

Haha yea, Qualisar is the worst. It's so jarring when the ship flies straight out of the blue too.

No matter what options I set it's still there, so I guess it's something we will just have to deal with. Like you said earlier, the game plays fine, it's just a slight immersion breaker.

To me, what's worse is opening the door to a building and and seeing more outside. I was confused as hell when I first went to Kay'l's apartment.

I don't understand where these bugs come from. In the original game, a little loading icon appeared right before you entered a building, a sign of the room data being streamed in the background or whatever. In the GOG release, this loading icon doesn't appear. Hmm..

Actually, a GOG release sold for nearly 10$ should be polished to the max - it's just sad that the immersion of someone who has never played the game before could be lessend by such "oversights".

edit:

To make sure I just tried the warez / repack version that has been floating around the last year(s): it doesn't have these glitches (streaming, blue fog, etc.) , and runs well. Except for the color banding / alpha blending issues. But these are actually less ugly than the GOG version problems. It's kind of sad.

The blue fog gets REALLY bad in the Z-Tech factory, too.
Got the blue fog too.
Also it lags a fair bit on my Atom330/Nvidia ION/4GB DDR3 setup if above medium settings :\
I also expirience graphical artifacs/issues. And I tested it recently on the same configuration with my original CD copy. which was fine, despite running windows8. While much less stable and more hassle to run the first time - it didnt have any of those bugs, and blue light and seeing through walls - that really breaks immersion and annoyes, especially if you remember how it was SUPPOSED to be like. I bought the game to get rid of the CDs, but I think this is still important enough to wait with playing. This NEEDS to be patched (at least for me).

EDIT:

Maybe they removed the 8bit textures, and now the lack of fogs or other transparent materials make those strange solid color problems? Those textures in modern hardware that doesn't handle them anymore often makes problems? Just a thought...

Kind of reminds me of that screwed up HD version of Silent Hill 2, if you ask me.

edit:

I copied runtime.exe and patch.dll to my original version's directory, starting it then reproduced the error. So the problem lies within patch.dll and runtime.exe, no textures seem to have been changed.

I guess I should step in and say something, since it's my patch.

To prepare for any eventuality where a change causes anyone more problems than it solves, I always add config options to disable bits of the patch. If you open the file %APPDATA%\GOG\Nomad\config.ini, (create it if it doesn't exist already) and type into it

[Graphics]
GraphicsPatch=0

That will disable all parts of the patch related to the graphics, and get you back to what the cd version would look like. (If I try that on my system, it ends up looking like this. I'd say my patch is a fairly significant improvement in that case. :p)

I have no suitable old computer to see what the game is supposed to look like, (and obviously, it doesn't work unpatched on any of my modern ones,) and didn't realise the random blueness wasn't in the original. I'll see if I can do something about it. I haven't seen the door glitch myself... Maybe it's already fixed in the new version of the patch I sent in to GOG, or maybe it's hardware specific or something. (Which would be a real pita...)

Edit: Tis easy when you know it's there. I've found the cause of the weird blueness and fixed it. :)

If you see anything else you recognise as not belonging, and you can make up a screenshot of what it should look like, a savegame nearby and instructions on how to get there, I'll take a look at it and see if I can get it looking more like the original.
