Is there a game over screen? it seems when I take a hit that ends the game or meet a scenario termination event, I get dumped to desktop. Is this a feature?

I'd say definitely not. Upload your crashlog to the address given in the game in the news section. Sounds like a bug. I've been destroyed before and it should not crash to desktop.
