Dimadyn: Hello there, I recently bought Nox from gog.com and it's not working on Windows 7 64-bit as described. I already have the original game and it's quite difficult to get it to run properly so I thought "finally, a way to play this again". The game wasn't expensive and download/installation went quite well but it's not working as intended.

I installed and started the game from the shortcut and the intro video is just black, then a flickering/black version of the Nox logo/splashscreen comes up and then it hangs. Gog advertised this as being combatible to Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit), so far it seems that this is not true.

It is possible to run the game with "-window" at the shortcut and 16bit colour depth, BUT that means NO VIDEOS AT ALL as they will not play in windowed mode and you get horrible tearing, there is no way to have vsync when playing in a window or windowed. Furthermore, as soon as you open a menu ingame the framerate seems to go up/interface animations are too slow.

Guys, I really like your gog project, being a fan of CD Project for quite some time and all but if you do not have any idea on how to get the old games running on newer systems or how to build a proper wrapper then don't try to sell them. People will see this as nothing else than a rip-off. It means that portals such as gog.com are not to be trusted and this only harms retro gaming.

Anyway, if anyone has an idea on how to fix this please post. Thank you very much in advance.
I am also having identical problems with Nox. I also expected a working version, issue free with purchase. That is why I like gog.com. I am not super computer savy so I need someone to fix it so i don't have to tinker. I may have to ask for money back :(

Not sure if this will help at all, but these are the settings I have on my computer to get it to run properly.

Run in compatibility mode with Win 98/Win ME
Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition

To be perfectly honest, I'm not even sure if they're helping it, but my game runs perfectly fine with those settings, so I don't see the point in changing it and potentially messing it up.
I just bought Nox, and ran into the same problem the OP did. I don't see the specific solution I eventually figured out listed here, so I figured I'd put it up, in case anyone else has this particular issue.

Basically, I was having the blank cutscenes and flickering during gameplay; none of the solutions I've found did anything for me, but while I was searching through my video card settings, I was reminded that I actually have two video cards, which run together. Sure enough, I disabled that, so the computer's just running with one card, and voila, it worked; game runs perfectly now, cutscenes and all.

Far as can tell, there's no way to set it so that it automatically disables when playing Nox, then reenables when you're done, so you just need to remember to handle all that manually, but it's a small price to pay to get this working

Dimadyn: Ah thanks for taking the time to post some more hints, running the installer as an admin is something I didn't try - great idea! :) Unfortunately it doesn't help. It is the GTX model indeed. Actually I am running on latest drivers, I have some other recent drivers but it's the same. I absolutely don't want to go too far back in case of drivers since my other games work quite nicely.

Any other ideas? It does work (not very good, though) in 16bit windowed mode without movies and quite heavy screentearing. The tearing is not thaaat important even if it's not very pretty, if I could at least get the movies to work in that "-window" mode I'd be happy I guess :) They should definitely remove the compatibility with Win 7 64-bit because it is misleading. I already had the game and just re-bought it because gog.com is actually offering the games with a wrapper/patches/hacks to make them work on newer systems.
My exact experiences except for the fact that I installed as admin from start, and my exact thoughts on the matter as described by above post.

Yes, I just got Nox as well, and it would not work regardless of what I did. I kept getting a black screen (no moving video) and then a completely shredded display when it got to the start up screen. It was so bad that I could not tell where to click to quit the program, and always had to force quit. However, once I read this post, this was indeed my problem. My laptop uses both the builtin in Intel HD 4000 of my i7 and an nVidia 640M LE. Once I went under the device manager and disabled the nVidia adapter (which I had never done before), the game played fine. So for anyone else having this issue whose has two display adapters, you do indeed need to disable the non Intel one in order to play this game apparently, or try to run the game under "window" mode, which is just as much of a pain, since at least for me I have to switch my display into 16 bit color before that will work either.
Hello guys,

I've got i7 with integrated HD4000 - Windows 8 64 bit.
I would like to tell all of you how I made that Nox worked for me.

In the installation folder you've got Game.exe file. Right click and use my setting which you can see in attachment image.

You must run Nox from Game.exe not from desktop icon!

I have a very similar system : an Alienware M17xR4 with Win 7 64 bit Home Premium and a Nvidia GTX 680M GPU (plus an integrated Intel GPU). I've just bought Nox in the sale and have precisely the same problems as the OP - and then some ! I have installed the game outside Program Files so it has nothing to do with that.

To make things worse for me I cannot even switch to my Integrated GPU (by right-clicking on the Nox desktop icon and choosing the Intel GPU from the Run with graphics processor option) as I get the following message when I try : "You do not have privileges to select the graphics processor in this menu". This is the the only game which will not allow me to switch GPUs in this way - all my other games (GOG or non-GOG) allow me to do so. Then, when I try to set up a custom profile for Nox within the Nvidia control panel, it will not recognize the game when I point it to the Nox.exe but instead calls it Warface.exe (wtf ?)) Most older games which won't work properly with my Nvidia GPU run pretty well with my integrated card but in this case I can't even test if that is the case !
I am running Windows 7 64bit and Nox crashed at startup so I disabled compatibility mode I can play it now.
The opening video is funky but game play is just fine.

You could try that to see if it works for you.

I tried that, thanks, and all the compatibility modes but it still doesn't work unfortunately. At the beginning I get a black screen with what is presumably the sounds of an intro video playing in the background, then I get a garbled, multi-coloured mess. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to get out of this but even this doesn't work until the .exe crashes completely : until it does so the Task Manager box appears for a fraction of a second and then the garbled screen appears again, meaning that I cannot even terminate the game in this way but have to wait for the .exe to crash completely before I can get back to my desktop.

Thanks for your reply, though, and I'm glad it works for you. I get the feeling that the game itself (though perhaps not the videos) might work if I could use my integrated Intel card but when I try to do so I receive a message telling me that I do not have privileges to select the graphics processor in this menu, which is incomprehensible to me since I am able to choose which GPU to use in any other game. The Nvidia Optimus feature doesn't work properly and never has done. At present I have my preferred GPU set to my Nvidia card in my Global settings because if I don't do this it will try to run certain games using the Intel card, even when I try to tell it to use my Nvidia card. The only way to test whether Nox would work with my Intel card would be to change the Global settings to prefer my Intel card by default, but this would result in many of my other games no longer working properly. Sigh :)
Having the same issue (Windows 8, i7). The past few days, the game has worked fine, then last night the Nox logo started flickering at the menu screen making the game unplayable.

Just reinstalled and it seems to be working.
I had the same problem but managed to get the game working just by
Running the installer as administrator.
Trying that first would be my advice...
;)

Hi,
I have the same problem you meet when running Nox.
I solved the problem by stopping one of two graphic card.
Your top-level laptop has two graphic card.
One is Intel integrated, and the other is nVidia/AMD/ATI.
Enter the control panel and select the section of video card.
Let nVidia/AMD/ATI be out of function, and then set the compatibility to Win98.
Sorry that I can't show the pictures because that's T-Chinese version Win 7 64-bit.
FYI
Tell me if you still have question.

The OP posted his problem about ten months ago and may have solved it by now ? in any case he was able to get the game - but not the videos - to run by using his Intel GPU rather than his GTX. I have exactly the same problem and a similar machine but cannot switch GPUs for some reason which I don't understand. I suppose I really ought to contact Nvidia to find a solution but I am not a member of their forums and not ready for a complicated technical response.

The game is installed outside Program Files but when I try to change GPUs I am told that I don't have privileges to select the GPU in this menu. This is the only game which will not allow me to do this. I'm at a loss. Next time I think I'll just throw my $2.39 straight down the lavatory.

Hey there,

no I actually never got the videos to work at all. I actually had to watch them (including the ending) on Youtube and that's it. Great. I am glad the game ran quite well all the time but it's not the "complete" experience you would expect. If I had more time I would setup a vanilla Windows 98 including drivers on a virtual machine, however, since the game is on GOG this should not be necessary. As always I find GOG great but only 8 out of 10 games are fully playable and even less can be considered "perfect" or "as they are meant to be played". Anyway, the people from GOG always offered great service, help and understanding of such matters. I had a similar problem with Haegemonia some time ago and they offered support and took their time to answer my emails about this matter etc.

So I'd go for GOG releases anytime. Would be great if they released a game only if it works completely.

(By the way, Haegemonia is a game which STILL cannot be played with ALL SPECULAR EFFECTS on ANY current gen video card - sorry, I just had to, trying to get this to work for several years now ;)
I agree with Dimadyn about GOG. Most of the time it is a joy to buy, download, install and play games from this site. I own three games which will not work at all : Nox, Desperados and Commandos 3 (Commandos 2 works sometimes but is unpredictable). One or two others require some tinkering to get them running satisfactorily but nothing too difficult and since I have bought 50 games from GOG and can say that 90% of them work perfectly well, added to the fact that I don't have to be online to play these titles and that they are DRM-free, plus the ever-helpful forums of course, means that I am very glad to have discovered GOG.

Nox, however, is now uninstalled and "on the back burner" as I have too many other things to do at the moment (including other gaming mysteries) to delve into the mystery of why it will not work for me. I am also not computer savvy so it is several times more difficult for me to find solutions than it is for those with more understanding. Anyway, I will probably have a shot at getting it to work in the future.

In short, though, it looks like you can play this game on an Alienware machine if you run it using your Intel integrated card, but the videos will not work. I only wish I could get that far !

Thanks to Dimadyn for replying :)
