I made it past the damp rock at the left side of the Collapsed Mines! I know about the black tunnel leading to the health upgrade but I found another one going further which I was able to drain into the cave using a blackhole wand. On the other side is a new area, Twisted (Twisting?) Caverns. It's similar to the first area, same enemies, but with random puddles of potions all over the place and tight, twisting terrain generation. At least part of the bottom is bounded by grey extremely dense rock and at least part of the left side is bounded by red extremely dense rock. I decided to go to the upper left and found a tunnel leading to a ceiling of packed snow which I was able to blast a tunnel through using my starting spark bolt wand.
I emerged into the Snowy Wasteland area. On the right side is the World Tree (just my name for it,) and on this side of the tree I was able to actually climb to the top! Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything up there, just a jagged area, like the tree has been broken. So I headed left, crossing a significant area of snowy hills before reaching a swaying wood bridge spanning a chasm. I crossed and then decided to blast a path around the bridge to see what was at the bottom of the chasm. I found some of the enemies from the snow caves levels down there and since I was at 18 health and under armed I retreated and continued left.
I reached a new area, entitled Lake! The Snowy Wasteland drops off into a large body of water, in which I encountered a few fish. I crossed this to a pleasant island inhabited by deer and ducks. In the center of the island is the wooden effigy depicted in one of the trailers. Beneath it a cavity in the earth can be seen. I would assume there's something really cool down there but was unfortunately unable to explore as I had used all my blackhole charges draining the damp rock barrier. Continuing left is another lake, or perhaps the same one, connected under the island. There was a big aggro worm in this one which I shot at, it bled worm blood. I went back to the effigy for a bit and when I came back the worm was gone so I swam left and hit an extremely dense rock boundary wall, a climbable one like the one to the far right of the world or above the lava pit. I climbed this for a long time before giving up and dropping down. I feel like I fell for a full minute and landed all the way back at the left edge of the Snowy Wasteland (held right on the way down.) I believe this is the left world border but can't be sure.
I was going to go back to the Twisted Caverns to explore and see if there was an exit at the bottom, maybe go all the way back to the Mines and get some bombs to get under the effigy but I when I got back to the chasm the bridge was gone. I was able to cross by pulsing levitate and land on the opposite wall but a Turso came up from the chasm and killed me. A good expedition overall. I'm very excited to be the first one posting about this area, though someone may well have already streamed themselves going over there. I intend to go back and try to get below that effigy soon.
Also, I wanted to note, earlier I did a lot of the exploring already discussed above but did it using a digging wand, which I don't think anyone has mentioned. I clears away a tunnel-sized circle in front of you in any rocky or sand or snowy material besides extremely dense rock. Looking at my progress screen the spell is called Digging Blast, zero mana drain, zero damage, +.02 cast delay, -.17 recharge time. The description is "More powerful digging." So presumably there is a weaker version of this. A really highly recommended exploration tool.
Also, have you guys noticed that some parts of the map don't seem to regen? The Overworld appears to retain damage over multiple runs, but I have only confirmed this on some areas of the right side.
