If I buy the GoG version of NMS is there a way to install the old version, the one before this Beyond rubbish?

I ask because I did see it mentioned on the steam forums.

Fingers crossed.
All this in alaxy launcher:

When you have the game installed click on it in the side-bar on the left.
Select MORE -> Settings, and turn off the Auto-Updates option.
If the game has any older versions available to revert to, you can select them under VERSION section.

Unfortunately the only older version that are there are the post 2.0 patches.

I'd try contacting GOG Support. They probably still have the old install sets available but do not put up a public link. GOG usually has stand-along installers for the main release points. All they can say is "Nope, sorry."

PS4 disk is version 1.0 and is a lot of fun if you kill updates and give it a go... they are bargin bin cheap.. found a copy once for $3 at BigLots.

as for the EXE you'll need to contact GOG or ask an archivist if one exists. I would love to get the original release of NMS stand-alone just for fun!

The original release was only fun if you didn't mind the huge memory leak that caused a crash to desktop every two hours or so. The earliest stable version, in my experience, is 1.08.

I was just after the last Next updated version before Beyond hit. The openGL one not the Vulkan.

If I knew for certain I could revert to this one with GoG I would buy it on GoG and my Steam version could suck eggs.

Your best bet is to try what Dashiichi suggested.
Install the non- GOG Galaxy version then save separately each Patch so you can easily revert if there`s a version you don`t like. People used to do this all the time before the likes of Steam came along and prevented that.

I do that with every game I buy here, not just this one.

Okay I think I will buy it on GoG (Its half price atm.) At least I can stick with what I have until I know any other updates are good or not. Atm, Beyond is deep down sucky.

GOG is DRM free, so you could just Torrent the NEXT version of NMS and copy it over your GOG installation and then stop it from updating. I am planning on getting the NEXT version of NMS, not because I want to go back to playing it, but because I want to see if I can get the keyboard bindings to work again by using some of the old settings files

You`re not helping GOG`s case by telling them to pirate. Help GOG by buying their stuff.
You could also vote for this feature on the wish list:
https://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/let_us_play_older_versions_of_the_games_we_buy
Maintain all that data of older versions would cost a fortune. I can understand why they don't allow it to go back to far.

Thats pretty much what I do. Just download the "Offline Backup Game Installers" (I only ever install GOG Galaxy if I want to test any beta 3xperimental version) ..

.. Then you can keep as many older versions as you want to back to your last known good version.

Watch out here https://steamdb.info/app/275850/depots/ for when a Public version is published. Then within a day the Offline Backup Game Installer files on GOG will be updated too.

For me right now though, with a Core I7 and a mobile Geforce 1050 ti - The newest Beyond update is the sweetest ever for performance.

https://www.nomanssky.com/2019/08/beyond-patch-2-09/

And Sean recently tweeted that the focus in the first week was to get the major crash issues out of the way, now that the majority of those are squished, more will be done, but concentrating on game bugs and performance is going to be more of a focus (as is evident from the 2.09 update above)

Edit : Ooh yeah, forgot to mention, if you dont have GOG Galaxy installed, you will hobble most multiplayer functionality, but if you are happy with it just as a single player game thats no problem.
