Does experimental mean it might be buggy? ... and what is a stable release called?

They're released on the experimental channel for live testing. Once deemed "good enough," they move to the release channel. Many (most? all?) of the release versions are identical to the final experimental build.

Unless you've opted in to the experimental branch, you should only see the release build.

Well, I never volunteered for the experimental channel, but the name of the file I tried to use to update myself to 1.60 is:
"patch_no_mans_sky_1.59_(23493)_to_experimental__(23826).exe"

Okay, they neglected to change the name on one bump from experimental ("beta" version) to the release tag. Not sure that qualifles as "almost every update" but whatever.

Thanks @dashiichi!
Ya know this was the source of much confusion when I was on 158d and support never gave me a real explanation.. Uhgg!

Roger that. HG has been busier than a cat in a yarn factory lately. I know they're trying but sometimes things can slip through.

I suspect that their prime goal is to make the ideal game that they'd want to play and the rest of us are just along for the ride (and the financial support). And that's okay! I know I've spent 'way too many hours on this. ;-)

I been working harder, than a cat trying to bury its turds in a marble floor.
Thanks, the version numbers give me fright, too. From other games I learned to use GOG versions in parathensis. What makes NMS patching so bad, is the lack of HG displaying it, in intro, setup, or options areas. Frostpunk has its versions in lower corner, which helps settles.my own nerdrage.
Would you want to fly in an 'experimental' plane? ;)

I like things a bit more stable, which is why i've still not got back into NMS just yet. SOON(tm) I hope to start my explorations again, but am just waiting for the dust to settle after the ridiculous update that NEXT really is.

Smart man. Distress signals lead to completely empty crash sites. The QA thsy got going for NMS is pitiful. No more plutonium!

Yeah, things are always a little rocky when a major update drops. It's much better now (cue John Astin voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8KdtJOCzOU)

You're also missing out on the weekly (more or less) events. They're not that big a deal, mostly a way to distrubute "quicksilver" that can be traded in for decorations. Fun to meta-meet other players. The exit portal for this week's event is there on the right, with a scattering of communication balls. A bunch more at the quest's points of interest. The base on the left is *probably* courtesy of HG.

This is me as well. There have been so many updates I`ve decided to wait a bit. All the updates are not a bad thing, though, the Readme shows some excellent improvements, but I`d like to start such a complex game when things have settled. I`ll probably start in about a week after I`ve finished the Walking Dead game rerun.
