Ive logged in and out several times in the past hour and no connection. The first star system that i discovered and named has had the name i gave it reverted back to its original name and so has the first planet i discovered and named

It seems the game is almost never connected anymore. Though I was on a couple of hrs ago and it was connected. Sad state of affairs.

I read that if you log off and log back on you won't be connected. That you have to restart your computer every time, it does seem to have an effect.

It has no effect, even if the connection issues were local. You don't rely on listening to incoming requests, the program just polls a portal/gateway and receives new addresses that you will use for a while. Some then become unavailable, and you switch.

And Windows doesn't automatically flush dns-cache on reboot, things like that. So if the connection issues come from RSPs bouncing you to unresolved server locations (instead of just being unavailable or overpopulated), you just need to wait until your dns-server is current (or there are free slots - that someone else got booted). Rebooting in that case has the same effect of waiting 30-40 seconds and trying again.

But since this kind of stuff is essentially what occupies an entire industry of customer service folks, I suppose I shouldn't be mean about it. Surely telling people to spin around on their office chair three times while spilling salt behind their backs to fix problems would be much more fun - but who am I to judge what people do to waste other people's time.

I can wait all day when it's not connected, it's still not going to connect. The post I read said it was coded into the game that once you log off that's it, it's not going to reset until the computer is rebooted. That seems to be the case, I can go for hours, and did, and it will never have a connection when I fire up the game. On the other hand, if I reboot, there it is, connected. So I'll go with what works. Sorry if doesn't fit your theory, I like results.
Oops. :p But then windows does flush dns on reboot. It's.. not supposed to after some update or other, but maybe it's changed again.

Maybe try forcing a flush and launching the game again if you can next time ( ipconfig /flushdns ).

Pont was this, though - your isp's dns-server needs to be updated, whatever portal downwards before you end-point needs to be updated, and then your router's cache, if any. And then finally the local cache (that you flush with that command/reboot) has to be updated. If - if - there's a current server end-point to reach on the same external reference.

So another way to deal with gateways that change addresses like this (or slow or bogged down dns-servers) is to use different dns-servers. Set one of the public google ones maybe. Just be aware that privacy is lost, and things like that.

i log out and in again all the time. i have never had to restart my computer to be connected.

just last night i logged out and back in like 6 times in half an hour (i was testing some mods) i was connected each time no problem.

Well for those who do have connection problems, (mine was almost never connected) trying different things is a must, if you want to be online. This is a workable solution for me, since I often use a second program that doesn't want to work after 2 start ups of the game. So it's not that big of deal for me to reboot.

my point is that is wrong to say the game requires a restart...it doesnt.

that is 100% false.

I would rather reboot and be online, than not reboot and not be online. Just because you don't have a problem, does not mean it does not exist. If that were true, you could post that all is fine, and there would be no need for support what so ever. In fact you would make a great tech rep. When people have problems you could tell them they don't exist since you a fine, so why don't they stop whining about nonexistent problems. You should really consider going into the field.
