Despite all the bad press, it's pretty fun, definitely a good advertisement for the power of procedural generation on such a large scale. Yes it's extremely repetitive and the inventory is artificially limiting, but I've been playing for what seems like tens of hours now and I'm still playing and want to keep playing so it must be OK.

Crosmando: so it must be OK.
Oh, dear, here comes the death threats. Better include some caveats and Murraylieds quick!

I`ve said it before but this game has a good, solid base. What it does well it does well. I love viewing other planets, choosing one, then zooming to it, finally to break into the fiery upper atmosphere and actually land on the planet. Then do it again to a new one, no one has seen before. I didn`t look at the hype or read what was supposed to be in it before I got the game and not until well afterwards (I advise you don`t as it will only disrupt your enjoyment of the game). Even before I knew about the centre of the Galaxy, I had no interest going there. Neither did I care for multiplayer at all.

It`s a game of exploration which was what I expected.

I do hope they bug fix and add in the extra stuff though...
I've had moments in this game, where I've been grinding too hard to upgrade my ship or exosuit when I'm like "I'm hating this game". On the other hand, there have been some planets I've been too that where I'm like "that is beautiful", whether it is a creature, landscape, bases, or skyline that I am admiring. The more I play the game though, the easier I get bored with certain planets where the landscape isn't very interesting. The game does somethings really well, and other things are just the result of procedural generation that causes boring repetition. I like it more than I hate it.
"No Man's Sky - The quest for 48 inventory slots™" Edition
i like it too.

i also didnt listen to the hype preceding it.

i also also dont even really view it as a "game" so much as something to do...like tending to a rock garden.

i enjoy viewing new planets and new creatures and new vistas. i even kind of enjoy the menial tasks i must perform that allow me to do that.

i find it somewhat meditative.
Playing your own music in the background or even listening to some audio book suits this game!

I really like this game a lot too. Somehow even the repetition isn't that repetetive. Seriously how many different critters do you see in other games? And every other game has a fixed map. No Man's Sky has a different map every single time. That's insane! So even when it is the same crystals and critters and features I've seen a few times they're arranged in so many weird, wonderful ways in hasn't gotten old for me yet. I could be fighting another Skyrim dragon outside Riften, or another zombie in ( insert zombie game here ), or another soldier/tank/aircraft/spaceship in ( insert multiplayer battle game here ). Repetetive shmetitive I say.

I don't know how it will fare beyond a certain point but for now the aliens and their stories and languages are key points, plus the journey to the center, that keep me intrigued and busy. These elements have sparked a curiosity I could not see in Elite Dangerous 2.0 for example. And that "just another unknown waypoint" can end up in a captivating/addictive way like a frenzy :-) Giving the game some background/purpose with like the monoliths was the wisest choice they made. Otherwise I might have found it boring, too. And I'm not into MMO.

I also enjoy the vistas and play of light or underwater experiences in certain places a lot.

And someone like me growing up with 8-bit pixel graphics and X-Wing untextured pure-polygon graphics also sees the technical breakthrough/achievement of the game. The seamless changes between warp/space/stations/planets are astonishing as well as the mathematical algorithms to produce stuff that has certain looks and works in a sensible way/is playable. A few oddities like floating stuff or underground sentinels at rare times aside for the largest part they know their procedural stuff! There are certainly still some growing pains with the reborn voxel technology but I'm optimistic that'll get sorted out.

About 25 years of gaming experience and the love of scenic/musical atmosphere (eg. Adventures) are my "lenses" of perspective on this game.
I like the game, but it does seem limited. Right now I am working my way up to a 48 slot ship, after finally getting the "transmissions tower" thing right. There is really no need for money. I have 15 million and doing the crashed ships for upgrades so I won't need the 170 million to buy one. After that there is nothing units (money) can do for you. The Weapon, Exosuit, and Ship upgrades are very limited. you will have all blueprints the first or second day. so in the end you max out everything very quickly in this game. Then there is not much to strive for, even though I like the game, it is a bit shallow.

theres plenty to strive for...if you strive for the things that are plentiful.

there are a maximum number of upgrades for your equipment, so obviously, you are limited there.

there are (near?) infinite amounts of things to see and discover.

i strive to find the most beautiful views, or the strangest creatures. i dont even know what upgrades i use or how many slots have.

Yes there are many ways to play this game. I might do the same after I find a nice 48 slot ship. I did do a total rebuild of my Multitool, because I didn't like the look of it. So I saw one that looked better to me and swapped a 24 slot, for a 24 slot, just for the look of the gun.

This.

I'm on the same boat. I wasn't a part of the hype nor did I expect more than what I have.
The thrill of not knowing what to expect when you land on a planet is what keeps me playing this game.
I enjoy the simple fact of exploration and discovering different things each time.
I'll be happy if Hello Games adds things to the game but by now, I agree on this, what it does, it does well.
I liked the spaceships , they had the look of ships from the Terran Trade Authority book. To look in the distance and see huge butterflies in a grassy field has inspired me to run into the field at full speed thinking WOO HOO BUTERFLIES !

Only to find out said butterflies were meat eating hunters, I did actually love that experience as it was a good learning one.

However I cannot help but feel that this game in its stock non modded version feels like a game that was designed for a tablet, the navigation and flight mechanics first and foremost being in mind.
It is good but not great. Repetitive but also relaxing. Certain planets are very pretty.
