What actually happened?

1) They were confirmed to be in the same area of space at the same time.
2) They could not see each other.

I've no opinion one way or the other as to whether or not this was what the game was supposed to produce in that situation. But that is what happened on August 10, 2016. Could be servers, could be there's just no functionality for that right now.

Frankly I don't care, I'm happy if it's totally single-player, apart from discoveries, even in online mode. I'm looking forward to playing tonight. Somehow you think that my stating the facts as they are currently known means that I'm annoyed with the developers.

What I read that was written by the developers today was that the game is single player and has no multiplayer component. I agree with you that it's a single-player game, and so long as the game has an offline mode that does not require a player to be online while playing then there is no DRM in the game, imo.
