After about... 3 hours? Of some really mind boggling repetitive actions and shiploads of Carbon upping my 14 words learned to 180 words learned in the starbase the game reverts it to: Nothing!

Game is really trying its best to get the good stuff overshadowed by stuff like that. :(

A save and exit would be nice so you don't have to get back in and then exit your ship just to save.

But how the heck did you manage to play for 3 hrs, do all of that (I've only learned 20 words in 9 hrs play) without exiting your ship a ton of times, or finding all those save locations on the planets?

He didn't , cause see he is what we like to call lying garbage that is just here to cry ...

You can actually interact with an alien more than once if you have 20 carbon.
Every second time you can request a new word in their language.

So he probably just got outside to gather some carbon and get back in the outpost to learn some new words.

Perhaps you should've played the game rather than did these "mind-boggling repetitive action", your own words. Hey you gotta take something from it.

I mean learning 180 words? And hauling CARBON? Do you want this game to be as tedious and unrewarding as possible?

For some odd reason the alien did occasionally offered resources and gave 90 carbon each time he did. So yeah, that took a while to deplete :) Do you even play the game? Besides: "Rant" is already in the topic. Yes, that + the the occasional pay back from the alien. Which I saw as some kind of odd "I'm sorry I do only offer shit instead of a word each 2nd try" settlement :P As soon as I started I just could not stop. I needed to see the one long sentence of alien gibberish translated :D

I did that too but only 10 or so times. I accepted for most of the game I would be translating just a couple of words per sentence, but that seems to be enough.

that`s not how you should play the game.

Go around, explore, pick up names from Aliens, ancient artifacts and other stuff while enjoying the game, as you go along.

You have to pace yourself and not get fixated. There are rumoured to be millions of worlds in this game. You won`t see them all. Trust me.

I think this game will break some people who are going to try and do everything perfectly.

and Considering that after 180 words of one language I still could not understand most of what the guy said or even ask basic stuff like "where is the station toilet" I guess learning languages becomes a very, very low priority. I don't expect finding an alien city with a book store the way the game is set up (or at least I perceive it currently to be set up; hear some weird shit going on the closer it goes to the galactic center). Ah.. ok... interesting. Now go to the street and try to catch the pretty lights.

I've learnt 100 words overall I think, not sure. But I'm just getting the odd word, but that's probably part of the game, trying to figure out what you have to do by the description and buy a bit of luck on whether you get 1 or 3 words translated. At least you don't really get punished. It's just convenient.

It`s very immersive and a smart mechanic. Much better than in most other games. It`s even smarter than Star trek with its instant `learn every language` mechanic which is higly unlikely.

Just like when learning a language in real life, you sometimes have to guess certain words because no person would try to learn it all in one go. It encourages you to guesswork as you go along. I love this mechanic.

If people want to torture themselves by trying to get the whole language in one go, that`s their business. They only insult you if you try to advise them different.

The only thing missing is a list of all the words you know, so for example when a guy wants something and you have to choose between a 'rare' material, a 'common' one and an 'uncommon' one, you can figure that you know what 'rare' and 'common' means and deduce the guy wants uncommon.
