gunnar_g: Apparently it left BETA today on GOG
Yep, for both client and Manual Installation files, they are both labelled 1.77_GOG_MP for the files, so presumably the Galaxy Client is not a requirement to enable multiplayer, and any GOG players can join in ..

.. Personally I will be heading straight to the settings to turn it all off. Likes my NMS Single Player only, as it was when I bought it :P
PSA. The multiplayer settings seem to be tied to individual saves, so if you're running one instance in Eissentam and another game in Euclid, for example, you may want to touch the network settings in both.

TerriblePurpose: Do you know if it's planned or is it always going to be GOG mp only?
avatar
elcook: There are no plans to add crossplay at the moment.
Is there any chance we could get Hello Games to embrace the 'Connect' feature so that our Steam friends can get the GOG version and then multiplayer with us?

This is entirely the developer's decision, so I cannot say if that's possible or not. We will definitely make a big buzz around it if it happens.
Ok I'm trying to find up to date info on the GOG multiplayer and this thread hasn't had an update in four months.

Is the multiplayer still in BETA?
When is it coming out of BETA?
Does it work ok?
Does it have all the same multiplayer features as Steam?
What is the current position on Steam cross play?

Thanks.

The current version is 1.77_GOG_MP, which was released on 25 January. It's as much multiplayer as the Steam version; same features. There is no cross-play between GOG, Steam, Playstation, or XBox. The "universes" on the different platforms are distinct; a system discovered/named on one, for example, does not propagate to the others nor will players in the same system but different platforms be able to interact.

Edit: tyop. Forum needs a sepll chekcer.

I have NMS on GOG, and my GF has it on Steam. I was able to visit her base in a system showing discovered by her. So it would seem uploads from GOG and Steam are shared, even if there isn't MP between them.

I did not realise that. Interesting!

Do you think with this new update NMS GOG payer will be able to play in the same sandbox as Steam players or are we still walled off?

gunnar_g: First: Woohoo, thanks!
Only with GOG players? Or steam as well?
avatar
elcook: There is no GOG and Steam crossplay, unfortunately.
What about with this new update?

In order for Steam and GOG players to be able to share multi player, NMS would have to take on the added functionality of an internal friends list and in game name. As long as NMS relies on GOG or Steam for the in game name, as well as the friends list, then it would be on Steam and GOG to work together to share friend list and account info about thier players ... and tbo, I don't see that ever happening.

But interestingly enough if you see bases of Steam player and their discoveries. So this data is kept in centralized DB. MP is just a step away from this. Fortnite does it without any issues. I get the Epic is huge, but player base is also much smaller for NMS.

Well, if you're going to build a game that, as a standard function, uses a central database to store discoveries uploaded by players, adding a 'discovered by' field isn't a big deal, and all they're doing is just adding the player name supplied by Steam or GOG.

In order to add an account system within the game for storing an in game name, as well as a friend list, that would involve adding another database to work that out, and currently they are just using the Steam and GOG platforms to handle that for them.

So my take is, we won't see Steam / GOG crossplay anytime soon.

Seeing stuff like this is very reassuring. https://www.reddit.com/r/gog/comments/cph7fy/worms_wmd_may_have_added_steam_crossplay/

Multiplayer is dead for Windows 7/8.1 customers starting from the Waypoint update.
