I don't own this game, but my friends do.

One Uses Steam version. The other one uses gog.


Steam version, I can do family sharing with him and got to play. Also connect to online. Pretty cool.

GOG version another friend wanted to try was able to try it, but could not connect to online. So downloaded the Galaxy client. Need a code to connect. Uses his friend code did not work.

So GOG is pretty pointless huh? I always thought GOG supported this type of thing, that not only DRM but sharing games fully with friends just like in the old days.

Needing to connect to get online services is a form of DRM.

You can share your Galaxy login credentials just like you can share your steam ones.

GoG has always been about DRM free experience in single player games and multiplayer LAN games. From what I heard you can play the game offline without using Galaxy at all.

I'm not sure how else you would suggest the devs do this. This is the same way other games work as well. That's one reason I prefer LAN mode games so I can play multiplayer with friends with only one copy like the old days. With an online service/servers they need to make sure the copies are legit and that people paid for them. The "DRM" associated with using your Galaxy account I find totally reasonable and expected.

The other option is they just don't release any of the single & multiplayer games, then everyone would be upset why they don't at least release the single player portion DRM free. They just can't make everyone happy.

I guess he could log into his friends account and do it like that. Just needing Galaxy for joining on hello games server seems a bit far fetch in a game like this *shrugs*

I understand what you're saying, but as the poster said above it plays the same offline, there is no need for Galaxy or the discovery name database sharing part of the game.

Wrong, What he finds for people is helpful to everyone. Wanting to feel like he is part of a system to discover things posting it online just for trying it out. He is missing out on how it feels. He pretty much said it was not worth it and uninstall galaxy and won't be using gog.


I can understand if it is a game requires a account to go online. But a game that requires no account for such a small part of the game. Gog pretty much forced that game into that.

The game do require an account to go online, it uses either your Gog or Steam account id, you cannot go online without it (for example the "cracked" version doesn't work online).

Also I think you are greatly over estimating the importance of online for this game; it's mostly just a gimmick. Unless you consider part of the full experience discovering how creative peoples can get to try to bypass the profanity filter when naming creatures and planets.... :)

It sounds like you cannot get paid units for discoveries if you are not online, as you cannot upload them and the game doesn't let you fake 'upload' them locally. Uploading discoveries is one of the best forms of income at least early in the game when your inventory for stuff to sell is limited.

That's not the case AT ALL.
I am not online and get paid just fine.

I was able to play without GOG Galaxy and went online too. In fact, I started OFFline unplugged from the net. After leaving my first planet, I decided to name it and allow it to go online. I did, just by plugging in the wire sending it, then plugging out. I`ve been Offline since then.

My only gripe is not being able to personalise my name.

I am playing "fully offline" (i.e. network card disabled) and I am able to "upload" new discoveries and receive Units for them. Maybe if you are in online mode and then lose connection it you can no longer upload new stuff, but, at least until now, it works fine in offline mode.

Glad to hear that. I've not tried playing offline myself, but saw someone else saying they didn't get units while offline.

So that is good, if you are travelling, or just don't want to see potentially silly names for things, or whatever reason.

It'd not plus chance you ever see this happen is very small as already someone said its gimmick nothing more.
