In the videos I've seen on YouTube, the players have their own names. How do I change mine from "Explorer"?

Thanks.

You have to use GOG Galaxy or be on Steam. As to why you can`t have it without?

Tumble weed across the prairie when I try to talk to anyone in GOG about this. Pisses me off.

Because of the silence I have to assume it`s a form of DRM which goes completely against GOG public policy. They do the same with Masters of Orion recent release. Again, we are ignored when we politely ask why.

Your best bet would be to request that Hello Games add in a feature where you can change your name when offline.

Forgive me for my ignorance but how does the name feature constitute as DRM?

At last!

Explanantion:

Being able to name your character and stuff in an open world type game makes a game personal to the User. In fact, most games lose any kind of personality if you cannot put your name to it. It immerses the Player User into his game, even if offline and Single Player.

Pretty much ALL games Devs know this from the earliiest Ultima games to today. That`s why it`s mind boggling that suddenly in games like MOO and NMS you can`t. This encourages people to use GOG Galaxy (which allows you to name your character at least by the Galaxy User name) when many don`t actually want to use an extra utility. I`ve seen people here immediately say they will go Galaxy just to be able to name their character Avatar, hence pushing people onto Galaxy.

Is GOG Galaxy not a form of DRM?

In my opinion it`s a needless extra utility much like Steam was and Steam started very much in this way before it became forced.

The fact that nobody answered these questions when asked previously, forces people like me to make assumptions. The logical assumption was this was an `on the sly` attempt to get people onto Galaxy, like Steam.

Also, I also ask politely to start with, but getting no answer for weeks can lead to frustration especially when we pay so much money on these things. We, the Player-user deserve an answer. This is the first time in weeks that anyone has bothered to answer the question that was asked multiple times.

In any case a person should not be penalised for not using GOG Galaxy and you appear to be saying this is not the case- fair enough, I will believe you unless facts to the contrary appear. I appreciate your reply. I sent messages to the Hello games people too (politely, always politely) and of course, no response. I will re-double my efforts with them.

If not having GOG Galaxy installed were to prevent you from playing a game offline and install it as many times as you wish, then yes it would be DRM.

As for not answering questions, I do apologize on our behalf for that. It's only due to the amount of questions and well, I had to test No Man's Sky for myself in various ways so that I could know more about it when it's played offline :)

Going back to the DRM portion of your post, ask yourself this:

Can you play the game offline?

Can you install it as many times as you wish and on as many compatible PCs in your house without being hassled by install limits or online activation?

The name feature being only reserved for those who connect online via Galaxy is up to your interpretation but it still does not prevent you from playing the game without Galaxy or an online connection :)
I appreciate your response.

But it does remove the full gaming experience that we paid the same price for.
It is not like steam or galaxy users are allowed to pick a name either. Seen quite a few who would have really preferred to be called explorer instead of a randomized username.
It has nothing to do with online or drm it's just shoddy work by the dev and something that could be fixed real fast if they at all bothered.

I think Galaxy, by the way they try to force on you, (I wouldn't have it but need it to play online) it is a type of spyware. They gather information about you and sell it. That is huge now days, and there is big money in. Just look at Google, it's there business model. I had an Android phone, at one point Google demanded (not asked) copies of my birth certificate, passport, and drivers license. I got an Apple phone. I don't know what Google thought they had on me that I would give up an identity thief's perfect score of information. It seems a lot of companies are trying to sell your personal information, they don't need a copy of your birth certificate because you are buying a toaster. Anyway, back on point, Galaxy could be spyware, sitting on your computer collecting information that they then sell.

If you do NOT use GoG Galaxy you do not get the full use of navigation features off the game, you cannot backtrack to previous stars. So yes when a major feature (like Navigation) does not work unless you are online then it is a form of copy protection be it true DRM or just a weak form of copy protection.

In this case as I have said to GoG before they are sell outs to allow this to be the only way for that feature to work and their reputation for selling games tainted.

Two major things happen when you do not use GoG Galaxy, star systems you have visited do not get the small lines around then to signify you have been there and you cannot use the key command to go to the nearest star system.

If I want to be shackled to the internet for features like this I would have gone through Steam but it was not something I expected from GoG. Congrates GoG you are in the same catagory as Steam now, you proud of yourselves ???
No one prevents Hello Games from implementing a simple way to login to their servers without relying on Steam or GOG. And no one prevents them from adding simple features like setting player name or backtracking visited systems in offline mode, for that matter...

Not got the game yet, but are there not files in the game you can access to change the 'Explorer' name if playing off line?

What about using something like a savegame editor (i have seen a couple in the mod lists) perhaps? The fact that your given the name 'Explorer' in off line mode means this is stored somewhere in the off line game files, so can be edited.

I've not seen anywhere talking about how to do it, but maybe ask in the modding sections of Reddit or on the forums that host the mods and mod makers, i'm sure someone has come across it at some point.

Yes it should be a default simple thing to do in game, but as we see with NMS, many things like this are not functional, so mods fix stuff, and digging into the game files might be the only way to go about this until/if Hello Games decided to add the feature?

while we were all waiting for the first patch to fix the amd cpu incompatibility problems, i was using the patch from steam just so i could play it. i had to get the patch from tpb...and as a shady work around it was giving me someone else name.

i was able to go into an .ini file in the binaries folder and manually change my name to my own. obviously im using the normal gog patch that im supposed to now...and i just checked my binaries folder and i dont see an .ini file to change now.

that doesnt mean there isnt one...i just dont see it anymore.

my point of saying all this is just to point out that it was at least possible at one point to manually change the name for offline mode. i would imagine it still is...somehow.

This just creates more questions than answers. Why make it so difficlut to put something as simple as your name in the game? I sent an email to Hello, I doubt I will get a response on that matter.

i hear you...perhaps it has something to do with you being able to play offline and online with the same save file.

since online mode auto retrieves a name based on your gog/steam account...it would potentially (almost certainly) mess things up if you changed your name in offline mode then connected back to the servers again.

not being able to enter your own name makes perfect sense if the online and offline modes are interchangeable...which they are.

Well great that it makes sense for you, but I`ve been around too long and seen you people (who aren`t Devs) talk EXACTLY like this, as if you know, then a month later, you turn out completely wrong

Don`t mind me if I choose not to agree with you.
