All of the Google results seem to indicate that the GOG version doesn't work multiplayer with Steam players. That is honestly a massive deterent for buying GOG games in the future. Unfortunately everyone I know sticks with Steam almost exclusively.

Correct. GOG and Steam are separate. No crossplay.

And yes, I agree it's stupid.
