I am probably missing something glaringly obvious here, but how do I buy additional ships ? So far , every ship I encounter only gives me the option to buy the new ship by selling my old one. I do not see an option to keep both-even if they are different classes. I do own a freighter and have established a planetary base.

You must own a freighter and be in your freighter. Then you can buy landing ships. You will see a 'Purchase' option when comparing, you also still trade-in your current ship with 'Accept'
