Hi,
I recently came back to NMS to check the big update. Unfortunately since the update I experience regular crashes: computer just restarts without any trace in Windows error logging.
Directly after the foundation update NMS crashed when loading the game - I therefore updated my geforce drivers to newest version. Now I'm able to play from 10 minutes to 1 hour - somewhere around that time the computer just restarts. It does not seem to depend on what I do in the game - I usually can just continue what I did and the game won't crash if I redo the same action as before.

My system:

Zotac GTX 970 OC
Intel Core i5-4460
MSI-Mainboard B85-G41 PC Mate
2x4 GB DDR3 RAM Crucial
500W Cooler master power adapter

Upgraded to Windows 10, added a second 1TB HDD + 256 GB SSD

Memory check (Windows 10) does not reveal anything, using different ram slots / removing one RAM module also did not help.
FurMark is also able to cause the reboot, temperator goes up to about 75°C, so it should not be too hot on the graphic card.

Any ideas what I could check to find out where the problem is located? I don't know whether a power shortage could appear, the people I talked to told me that the additional disks won't cause such a problem.

Best regards,
Christoph

You say your computer is 'restarting'. Does it leave Windows and is restarting? Can you see a message onscreen before it launches Windows? This is bad news, most often it means your computer is about to overheat and shuts down to avoid damage. If it was a driver error NMS would crash to desktop and not restart your computer. Also 75° is high, I have a GTX 960 and my card doesn't pass the 55° on medium settings.
Try to check your Power Energy options, maybe your system is set to 'Energy saving', in that case switch to total power.

In addition to XenonS's answer, you might try uninstalling/reinstalling NMS after backing up your current state of play. I've seen instructions on how to do this without losing your "place" in the usual places around the web.

Have you checked the Windows event logs?
Hello,
nothing in windows event log (unfortunately).
Screen goes black, after some seconds the computer restarts - just like if you would switch off the computer for a short time.
The people I talked to say overheating is not really the problem - below 80 or even 90° should be ok for most cards. While testing with Furmark I also chose to "overclock" my fan to run with higher speed - this settled the temperature around 72° but after some time still the restart occurred.
Energy options are fine - I tuned some settings, e.g. to deactivate standby mode so this should not disturb me while playing.

I recently moved my installation from HDD to SSD, also I did verify the installation via galaxy client. Do you think reinstalling would change much of the game?
Best regards,
Christoph
Maybe a download manager or similar program on your system is set to go in standby/shutdown ?
I would re-install NMS because it will read your new system and write new config files.
Happy you if ti's not overheating, because that's the worse case (GPU overload).

This game pushes cpu and vid card. Get a prog called HWinfo and run it while playing. It will record temps of cpu and vid card while you play. You can step out of game and check the temps and return using windows key. Usually flying causes the most temps in vid card. I got 80 * C on my vid card a lot while playing ( radeon R9-380).
no download managers running in the background - and if so I would not set them to shut down the computer afterwards.
Thanks to good network I gave reinstalling a try. I played some hours today (with medium settings even if my computer should handle high settings), game went smoothly mainly.
I had one shutdown when I tried to Alt-Tab into windows - no idea if this persists or not. I will try to Alt-Tab once again soon. I remember that Alt-Tab froze my computer once when it still was loading.

I think I tracked temperatur once with MSI Afterburner - this did not reveal anything useful as the temperatur was not that high.

The problem with reinstallation is, of course, losing one's progress to date. I'd hate to have to start over! But, it may be the most straightforward way to ensure that no pre-update leftovers are causing problems and I'm pretty sure there are instructions out there on how to save the current data.

Before trying that, though, go back in the forum history starting around the end of November 2016. Many people had stability and crashing issues after the update at that point and there are several good threads on possible fixes. If I recall correctly, for example, there were some changes in the XML file structure that hit some users.

Also, in the More | Manage installation from the GOG game screen there is a Verify/Repair option. I had crashing problems myself (although not full computer restarts) even after applying some of the November/December forum fixes unil I ran Verify/Repair a couple of times. Once may have been enough but just in case... ;-)
Hello,
it looks like reinstalling the game did not cause any trouble. Upon uninstall it asked to purge the save games - I did not chose that option so I could play again with my old savegame.
Lately I did not suffer any more crashes, even alt-tab worked without problem.

Let's see whether this persists now and whether I can increase graphic settings to maximum again without loosing stability.
Thank you for all the suggestions.

Good that you have overcome the crashes. A less troublesome way to go to desktop is to use the Win key + D, the ALT-TAB is less reliable because it wil switch to a program or app in Windows, (explorer etc...)
