SecondMan: I tried all of the above, as well as installing the latest NVidia drivers, reducing graphics settings, to no avail.

Until I deleted TKGAMESETTINGS.MXML (I renamed it to .backup just in case) in Binaries/SETTINGS in the install dir. Hurray! Everything works! :)

Seems to be something to do with remapped controls. Maybe a syntax change or something?

In any case, I'm up and running again - hope it also works for some people here.

Cheers!
Thanks, this really fixed my problems.

This should be marked as Solution to the problem!
Full game reinstall, deleted both TKGAMESETTINGS.MXML and TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML files... Still not working for me :(

PD: I'm using Windows 10 and a Nvidia GTX 970 card with updated drivers
I guess I'm a 'me too' but it's directly about fresh install, not update. I created a topic here:

/forum/no_mans_sky/gog_galaxy_let_me_install_11_from_scratch_and_now_it_silently_fails
I had this problem, so I deleted the installation, reinstalled and now it works.
I had the same problem. It is because of mods, or something a mod has left behind. I totally removed the game and reinstalled without mods and it works fine.
Downloaded 1.09 standalone version and works fine but when I update or download ful 1.1 version with gog galaxy it breaks

gimpah: So I've updated to 1.1 through GOG, but now it crashes out everytime I try and start a game. I get to the option of which mode to start, but picking any of them instantly closes the game. I have tried a fresh install, deleted anything mod related, updated my graphics drivers, tried starting in windowed mode but nothing seems to be working. Running on an i5 with Radeon R290. Any suggestions?
same problem here to ctd everytime i want to start a new game from the three mode menu..

Same problem here, crash with each game mode's. Re-installed NMS, Updated Graphics drivers. Still no luck. Prior to updating could run the previous game without any problems.
Try to delete cache folder in Appdata/roaming/hello games

Always the same. Not working.
Going back to Windows just after game selection...

Well... It's working now...
Just total uninstall + delete local folders (except Binaries/SETTINGS), and re-install...

Perfect ! ;)
But, if you fully uninstall the game, you lose all your progress, don't you?
Worked for me as well. I had installed some mods on my old game, and at least two of the .pak files left behind were mod-related. Not sure about all the others, but I seem to recall the mods installing very few files, so I don't know if this fix will only work for people who had a modded game or not. Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Blizado!

Thanks, SecondMan! Your solution actually works!

As you say, the error must be related to something as silly as the remapping of the controls (I was playing with gamepad and noticed that some controls which were customizable before now are no longer customizable, hence the change).
Tried EVERYTHING in this post, downloaded NMS 1.1 standalone installation and tried with it again and still the same problem... game doesn't launch. Am I the only one? I've tryed installing 1.09.1 with the installer and game works smooth perfect but somthing is wrong with this foundation update for me. I have Windows 10 and a GTX 970 with lastest 376.09 drivers.
