You know what really bothers me about this game? A couple of years ago I picked a random user name for GoG and now that is the name I am forced to use in a game that is basically about discovering new worlds and naming things. Every planet I discover automatically gets my name tag (discovered by...), of course I can change the planets name but not my player name... that does not make any sense to me. To make things worse: The game also constantly shows my player name when in the spaceship because thats part of the console (at least in my ship right now).

So I asked support to change my GoG user name but I did not get any response for 5 days now. I want to start over after the change so if anyone from support reads this: I'd really appreciate the change so I can play NMS on the weekend ;-).

What do you guys think? Is there any reason not to allow us to choose our player name when starting the game?

Of course there is no reason. :) Unfortunately they didn't implement such an option into NMS, so we are stuck with what we got.
They should just allow you to change your name in the options without being chained to GOG Galaxy or forced as `Explorer` if you don`t use GOG Galaxy.

It`s hard not to have conspiracy theories when Devs and even GOG do things like this as there is no reason why it just couldn`t have been a simple option to choose a custom name in game.
The stuff you all are consuming: can I have some?
So I got contacted by support but I had to give some evidence that the account was actually mine before the name can be changed...
Kinda makes sense but now it's the weekend and I probably have to wait until next week :-(

Anyways, maybe thats usefull information for other players.
I'm curious how it works in something like Steam where your display name is non-unique.

Do they just have bunches of people with the same name discovering stuff?!?
