Can anyone please confirm that I'm not massively stupid or illiterate here?

I start out with a 5x5 grid of inventory space, which is 25 slots.
Then, I try upgrading at a station, getting the 26th slot - and it adds one on the side, alright...
... but also removes two from the lower right corner at the same time.

It still claims there's "26" slots, now, and I've run the numbers. That's just plain wrong.
Conspiracy?!

There's a new experimental available on Steam (31/08), and one of the patch notes indicates, that you're neither shtoopid nor illiterate :)

"- Fixed an issue where players with certain numbers of inventory slots would have those slots hidden by other UI elements."

I quite liked the change in scaling for the inventory displays introduced with 1.58, but obviously this introduced bugs for some players.

Edit: Hm. On second thought, I think we should rather settle with the conspiracy you supposed. Won't help with solving the issue at hand, but allows for a lot more creativity :D

Related to the text of the fix, someone posted a screen shot showing that these two slots are not actually missing and could be interacted with although the contents are not displayed, move your mouse in the blank area to the right of the slots. Someone else has posted that the slots returned to the correct spot but only after adding enough new slots but the first slot didn't appear to return until after adding the 29th slot or so.

This was done without using the so called "experimental."

Well, the items that used to be in these got bumped up top and I can't place them back down there again. As such, the slots are indeed gone. Even if they were "still there" if you know just the right pixel to click on, doesn't change the fact they've become effectively unusable and that it's a bug, does it...?

Well in any way, sure hope that gets patched soonish...!

Well, you know. A good conspiracy theorist doesn't get distracted by facts, either. :)

It was patched in 1.58E as ksj8ak2 noted above. You have to have experimental enabled to get that which also requires using GOG Galaxy and apparently there is another patch to 1.58G (they apparently skipped F or perhaps they use a different alphabet) this afternoon for the week 2 community missions. However, have not seen any change summary posted yet to see what else this new patch does.

How do experimental?
I dun has option.

Where's it hidden? Or not available for NMS on GoG?

I forgot to include - before doing anything backup your save games and then clear Shadercache. The save game backup is so that you do not lose current progress.

Instructions from GOG are here: https://support.gog.com/hc/en-us/articles/212807005-How-do-I-sign-up-to-beta-branches-

The password is 3xperimental.

Instructions for deleting shadercache copied from https://hellogames.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002807129-I-m-experiencing-graphical-issues

> GOG Galaxy:

> Click into your “GOG Galaxy” directory in explorer

> Click “Games”

> Click “No Man’s Sky”

> Click “GAMEDATA”

> Click “SHADERCACHE”

> Please delete all the files within this folder and attempt to run the game again.

To backup your save games:

1. Create a new Folder and rename it as your desire.

2. Navigate to C:\Users\[insert user name\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\DefaultUser

3. Copy files ending in .hg

4. Paste these copied files into the folder that you created.

5. If you have a problem you can copy the save game files back to the directory in step 2.

6. Periodic backing up of save game files is recommended.
