TarinCat: So...I dug out the old NwN and wanted to play it again. Only problem: Since I last played it a couple of years went by...(and I feel old, which is besides the point). Back then I remember the Combination of Rogue and Wizard was really fun. And I remember there were guides....which I can't find anymore. I played around a bit with the Debug mode and whatnot...but I can't figure it out anymore :(
I want to start out Rogue and then go, as an Half-Elf, into Mage...I remember I need quite high Dex and Int from the start (16). I remember I didn't go 1 - 1 in the levels....but here it grows fuzzy. Help me! Open for suggestions and advices (maybe it's nice later to toss in a 3rd Class? Haven't had a look into the prestige ones).
Thanks guys in advance!
This depends on what you want to play. Rogue/Wizard doesn't have very good synergy; wizard compounds the greatest weaknesses of the rogue class, and rogue does nothing to improve wizard spellcasting. So it's a very difficult combo to work with. I'd suggest these three approaches, only one of which is actually a rogue/wizard but the other two keep much of the flavor:
If you want to focus more on wizardry than roguery, then 1-2 levels of Rogue and the rest to Wizard is your combination. Wizard doesn't multiclass very well with anything, so even 2 levels is going to have a very negative impact on your spellcasting power. Still, if you want all the extra skill points of the Rogue this will work and it'll actually pay off nicely in the epic levels (though it's a long time to get there if you're playing through a campaign).
If you want to focus heavily on roguery with only a little wizardy, then I'd suggest to take
no levels in Wizard. The rogue has access to the use magic device skill, which allows him to activate wands and scrolls irrespective of class restrictions. There's largely no need to actually go to the effort of taking wizard class levels when you can duplicate most low-level spellcasting with a little bit of gold. By avoiding taking wizard levels, you'll be significantly stronger in melee. Taking one level (or more) of fighter is a good idea on builds like this, since it gives you proficiency with most weapons and all armor and shields.
Finally, if you want a more balanced approach between roguery and wizardry, then the bard is your best option. In terms of spellcasting power a Bard is about 2/3rds a Wizard, but it has higher hit point attack bonus progression. The only things you really lose out on are evasion and sneak attack, but if you're investing a lot of levels into wizard you'll never be very good at sneak attacks anwyays.
