I recently bought the complete edition of NWN2 here, as I got a sudden hankering for Mask of the Betrayer, and wanted to try my hand at making a module. Now, as I recall from when I played this game about four years ago, the graphics engine is horribly optimized. The only thing that's changed in my computer since then is the graphics card, so I don't expect it to work much better this time around. Thus: are there any unofficial patches that try to do something about this?

Also, how is the module scene? I tried A Dance With Rogues for the original game, and thought it was brilliant. Is there anything like it for NWN2?

I'm not aware of anything like this.

A couple that I remember offhand:

Harp and Chrysanthemum I thought was excellent.
Pool of Radiance Remastered: a quite well done remake of the original in the NWN2 engine.
Tragedy in Tragidor: good, well done remake of the author's NWN1 module.

Not to my knowledge. The closest thing might be the NWN 2 Client Extension1. It fixes some of the stuttering while walking, among other things.

To add to Coelocanth's list:

The Maimed God's Saga is a great module for Tyrran priests (though Paladins may also work).

The Wizard's Apprentice is a pretty humorous module for Wizards (Sorcerers can also work, but Wizards will have an easier time). The sequel can be found here.

Icewind Dale This is a remake of IWD 1 for NWN 2. It is very good, although not entirely bug free.

Path of Evil is one of the best modules for evil characters. Hold on, that's not right. It is the best module for EVIL characters.

However, if evil isn't your thing, you may try Grimnor. It's a module from the same maker, but for Rogues and other scoundrels of all alignments. It doesn't contain much combat, but the possibilities for thieves is astounding. (Although you may want to wait until you get a better PC before playing it, as it is very demanding.)
That's a neat list, thanks. Are any of those "must-plays", sort of like how ADWR was the best of its generation?

Subjective, of course, but I'd put Harp and Chrysanthemum on my 'must play' list.
Harp and Chrysanthemum is a must play, I will definitely add my voice to that choir.

Dark Waters is a superb module and well worth your time.

Subtlety of Thay is another good one worth looking into.
Well, it appears a fan patch won't be needed. I bought my physical copy of the game after Mask of the Betrayer came out, so I guess they must have worked really hard on getting the game to work or something? Even going from an 8800 GT to a GTX 560Ti, it seems hard to swallow.

Hmm. Maybe someone oughta make a list of recommended modules?

I'll second these.
I'd also suggest PJ's modules starting with Sheep and Stone. He is coming out with all his modules combined into a single module soon so it might be worth waiting to play.

Misery Stone is a must play in my book, even if you're not usually a fan of gothic horror.

Hmm. Is there a mod that implements quickloading?

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread from 2013 but are there any plans for ign to restore the content for NWN and/or NWN 2? Can these additions listed here be downloaded anywhere else?

Seems the community has taken matters in their own hands.

The replacement is not yet complete but progressing nicely.

Ooh I can't wait for it, I read the description from the second module, Caravans, two weeks ago and I really liked it! Unfortunately that one isn't up at the new Vault yet and Wayback Machine doesn't have it archived, so I'll just wait till the combined module is released. Will it be in few weeks or a month, more? Just curious.
