It's the biggest update in history of NWN EE. :) The biggest improvement is the new lighting engine. The game really looks better now! Also the water effects are updated and lots of other things. Not here yet (at least, for the standalone installers), sadly. Can't wait for this one - mainly in the hope they'll have finally fixed pathfinding this time.

The patch is live for Galaxy users. Probably the offline installers will be updated in a day or two. Pathfinding is better, but still not perfect in this version. There are still some problems when you control your character by holding left mouse button. It's a lot better when you click however. :)

Apparently there are issues with the non-English versions crashing at the moment, and they're working on a fix. (Or did you run the English language version?)

I only tried Wyvern Crown of Cormyr and Kingmaker modules and I can say that changes are visible. :)

I'm playing in English, so I wasn't aware that the game crashes when you play in other languages. Probably Beamdog will release a hotfix soon.

A hotfix has been released, so probably the error you encountered is no longer a problem. :)

For the offline installer, will the patch file on the download page make the game the latest version, or do I need to download the game installer and re-install the game to get the latest version?

The patch file is for one of the previous versions. As of now you need to re-download the whole game or use Galaxy to patch it.

But then again, that is a consequence you probably should have expected when installing Linux.
It's like getting mad when a book at the library is out and you'll have to reserve it for the future. I like free books, so for me the waiting is acceptable for not having to pay for reading.
