Alright. I just purchased this game, got it all installed, etc.
Every time I try to launch it, I get the "Neverwinter Nights has stopped working". That's it. Don't get anything else, it just won't load up.

I have windows 7, I downloaded it with the GOG downloader, it installed perfectly fine.

More details: I get the 'not working' message right after the splash screen. I ran the critical update to see if that helped, nothing. I installed without shortcuts and directly onto the C drive, nothing.

Are you running the shortcut "as administrator"

And running the directx thing didn't fix the issue either.


I also just did a complete reinstall and it's still doing it.

i had the same problem install the premium modules it fixed it for me.

oh ya when u go to download nwn from my collection there will be a my bonus content section at the bottom there will be a premium modules re-installer about 172 mb it'll have a bow next to it. i think that'll help but i've never been very good at directions.

Downloaded all that stuff too and nothing's changed.

It LOOKS like it's trying to b a video/graphics card thing, but I made sure everything was up to date.

NWN1 has challenges with multi-core machines. There is a fix for that. Since you're on XP I'm assuming you're on an older machine. If this assumption is correct you most likely have a corrupt download. I would download it again.

A critical rebuild might fix it too.

NWN used to run best on NVidia cards, and had challenges with GeForce, but that's just not the case any more. Newer cards can be a problem pretty much no matter who made them, but new Nvidia cards have been particularly difficult to get working.

Even on older cards, newer drivers can be problematic as well. Some people have actually gotten the game running by rolling their drivers back.

Actually I'm sorry, IDK why I posted windows XP. I have windows 7.

A friend of mine has helped me out a LOT pinning down the issue, and it does appear to be a video thing.
Older driver worked, updated one does not... however it's VERY inconvenient to have to roll back to get this to work. I play other games, it'll be a pain in the butt to have to constantly swap.
Is there any other fix?

My card is ATI Mobility Raden HD 5870, I've already done the critical rebuild.

Edit: My friend told me to also mention that there are compatibility issues when checking the config, and when reading the ini file it shows my graphics card as "unknown".

Try finding your copy of atioglxx.dll from the install folder for your graphics drivers, and paste a copy of it into your nwn folder...

Also, have you installed outside of the C:\program files\ folder? E.g. to C:\Games? Try that...

I did the disabling movie intros, still crashes.
I also did the atioglxx and copied it to my NWN folder. Still crashes.

It's already directly in the C file, if that's what you mean.

Well I uninstalled my video card and went back to 5800, and now the game runs perfectly.
This isn't the solution I really wanted, and if anyone has any other ideas, that'd be awesome.

But hey, 'least I can play now. x.o

It is picky with ATI drivers. Can just be a case of finding a version that works and sticking with it.

Are you using the 64 bits textures? Try using the 32 bits, it worked for me.
