So when I start a new game, instead of clicking on "create character", if I click "select character: the game crashes to the desktop. It seems not able to access saved characters. This is going to be a problem when I complete the OC and want to export the character to continue with the expansion.

Any clue as to how to fix this?

I've done an uninstall and redownloaded the game. Thank you.

Has your Documents folder been redirected to Onedrive, or are you using GOG Galaxy?
I'm using Galaxy. I've disabled cloud saves.
I had something similar happen based on a module that created incompatible characters. Once I was done that module attempting to look at the saved characters in a different module, NWN2 would crash.

Find your character save directory and remove all your characters and back them up somewhere else.

If that solves your problem, bring your characters back a few at a time to narrow down which is the problem one.
Problem being I'm doing this on a complete fresh install. Vanilla with nothing other, no mods, no saves, no nussink. Plus there's not even a character saves folder.
Ok so I deleted galaxy. Uninstalled. Redownloaded the manual install files. Reinstalled. No mods. New game. Select character. And crashes.

This game is broken.

Windows 7. Run as admin. Tried compatibility modes.
Ok I found the problem. I'm a genius!! (Not really but it's good for my standards).

Firstly I couldn't find where the save files are stored. For some reason windows 7 saves the game in my documents as opposed to the directory the game is stored. (Insert eye roll emoji)

Secondly I didn't know what the folder was called that contained the character saves. A browse through the nwn1 files shows they're under a folder called localvault.

So I went to the character saves for nwn2 and there it was. I created a psion on persistent world server. It's obviously making the game crash as the offline games don't recognise the psion. I just didn't realise the server based character still gets saved in your local files.

Crisis averted!!!

This is exactly the problem I told you about.
You did but I had to find the folders and files myself. Could've been more specific.

And you could have asked, and you could be a bit more polite to people helping you.
Could've yes. And thank you.
