I have never been an hardcore gamer....I either play a REALLY impressive game, or I don't. I also don't really play anything other than rpgs. The only games I have been really impressed with, were Final Fantasy 7 and 8. The story was nonsense, but the battles and character development were very well done, in my opinion. That was many years ago, since then I tried a lot of other RPGs, my experience with them never lasted more than a couple of hours, even with all the newer Final Fantasy games (which I don't care about).

I also loved some Zelda games for the portable systems, such as Zelda and the Minish Cap. Yeah I know it seems ridiculous, and I definitely don't like kiddy games, but the ones mentioned were good.

In about 10 years the only RPG I somewhat liked, was Dragons Age, but it still felt unpolished in a lot of places. I also played Morrowind, Oblivion and tried Fallout 3 for a few hours. These looked nice but I wasn't impressed at all.

Then I played NWN HoTU, and I loved it, definitely an high quality RPG.

But NWN2 is another thing! It's the first time in years that I am playing an RPG for 5 or 6 consecutive hours and going to sleep at 3 am. I am currently really digging Mysteries of Westgate. I have sorted the camera, which at first was so exasperating it made me abandon the game.

This really is the RPG i have been looking for. Great atmosphere, very nice graphics, great soundtracks, and I love the wiseass replies in the NWN series, it's weird but that's why I never liked Oblivion or Fallout 3, the characters are just too serious and boring.

The balance between the voice acting and the text is PERFECT. There's nothing cheesier than hearing some NPC repeat the same stupid thing over and over. In NWN2 the NPC speak once and then it's text from them on.
I think this blends very well: it's not all text, and it's not always voice acting.

I am still getting to grips with the really vast magic etc system, but I have decided to invest in the time to learn the details.

My search is over.
Im glad you liked it. Been a major fan of the NWN series for a while. You should try Final Fantasy Tactics from the PS1 era is one of my favorite games of all times
The best camera option is probably the strategy mode, makes it play like Baldur's Gate .

Mask of the Betrayer is easily one of my favorite RPG expansion packs ever made, it taps into my love for Planescape Torment remarkably well.

*sound of skin burning*
If you are wedded to party-based rpgs then give 'Knights of the Old Republic' a try.

If not, give 'Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines' a try.
I tried Knights of the Old Republic, but the party control doesn't feel the same as in NWN2. I think it feels closer to Mass Effect 1. I haven't been able to get into either of those, personally.
Party control... I did not filter for that.

I was looking for amazing "character development" and games that I thought were "REALLY impressive" to give Escapist23 some things to try.
I agree with OP:

Is it a concidence that some of the best RPG's of recent years (probably of ALL time even) are:

NWN 1 + 2 (Bioware + Obsidian)

and

Kotor 1 + 2 (Bioware + Obsidian)

???

cool, I'll give them a try. Yeah character development is really important.
I remember hearing about a TBS that starts with a K, can you help? I don't think it's on Wikipedia's list of games.

That's kind of a left turn for this thread, buddy. Also, you don't give much information. Is it a new game? A legacy game? What sort of source did you hear about it from?

All I can think of are a mess of games that start with the words 'king', 'kingdom', and 'knight'.
Well it had a sequel that's been out for a few years. The name is a made-up word.
Konquest of Elysium 3 or Konquest of Elysium II or Konquest of Elysium?

Sorry man! The only way I can fulfill your criteria is by fudging the spelling. I'm stumped. If it's some kind of indie thing, then there are lots of games out there that I haven't heard of.

Let us know if you figure it out. I hate unsolved puzzles.
well are there any good lists you know of?

You could try www.mobygames.com/. Their list of games is pretty exhaustive.
