Hey guys,

I was pretty excited to see NWN posted on GOG with Win 7 compatability. However upon launching the game, the frame rate is pretty low, and when there are more characters onscreen, it dips even further. I tried to look up soloutions - the CPU affinity fix for example, but it didnt work. I tried running as admin, running in compatability etc etc, no go. Anyone know a fix for this?

My system is as follows:
Win 7 pro 64bit
Phenom II X4 940
4 gigs of RAM
EVGA Geforce GTX 470

Believe it or not, it may be sound related - I've had the same issue for years and tried various workarounds that did not work, so in the end I just stopped playing the game. Recently I found a suggestion to try and enable hardware sound - and suddenly I have a steady nice framerate with the game at highest graphic settings.

This game has (had?) a known bug with modern, multiple core processors, you just have to fire up task manager, find the application in there and set affinity to a single core. Wham! It jumps from 12-16 fps to a steady 60fps with vsync on and settings maxed out in my crappy Radeon HD 4200 system.

This is an nVidia driver issue. It's because of the 4 series you are using.

Until nvidia fixes it were in a crapper.

I'm on ATI, and it's running like a bag of bricks. Gonna try the CPU Affinity thingy...

Didn't run this bad in my XP Pro, though, as I recall.
Now using W7 Ultimate (32-bit)

lol. explorer.exe dies whenever I alt+tab out :\
Affinity resets to CPU0 whether I set it to all, 0, or 1.
Still running like a bag of bricks.

Compatibility mode for XP XP2/SP3 still bad jerky game-play.
Graphics options off-lowest = still bad :\

Ahhh, I see. That really sucks. Hopefully there will be a fix one day.

You are starting the game from nwmain.exe?

You installed the critical rebuild patch?

You running in windowed mode? If not maybe you should try it...



From the Bioware forums I always remember some unlucky people who had either FPS problems or that it sometimes hangs in Windows Vista and 7.

Most people get it to work perfectly without any effort though...so it is probably just bad luck.

I could agree that from the amount of problems with this I have heard about the game is probably not 100% compatible with windows Vista and 7.

However...this game is so good that it deserves you either downgrade your system to Windows XP or buy a new older computer with Windows XP hehe....(in worst case that is).

I'm not sure if multicore is a problem as of 1.69 (I don't have any issues with my C2D), but you could also try using the Client CPU Affinity setting in your nwnplayer.ini to restrict the game to using a single core. Possible values, noting that your cores are indexed starting at 0:

-2: disables CPU Affinity
-1: Defaults/Changes to 0
0: Run on CPU 0
1: Run on CPU 1
2: Run on CPU 2
....etc

As of 1.68 this game was not compatible with Windows Vista at all (could not be installed). 1.69 fixed this, but the GOG version reportedly is missing files from the 1.69 patch, though not files I imagine that would lead to such an issue. Still, you should try the <span class="podkreslenie">Critical Rebuild</span> for 1.69 to get the missing files.

Yeah, the game runs decently most of the time but really chugs in outdoor scenes and places with lots of characters. No matter what I do settings-wise, the game chops up. Running a GTX 470, Core i7-920 and Windows 7 x64. I honestly think at this point it's just an engine issue. Something about it smacks of extreme inefficiency to me, like it just can't cope with the volume of content (NPCs, large environments, etc.) given to it.

Let us not forget that this game was released almost 10 years ago. At that time most of the hardware and systems of today like Vista and 7 where not even thought of...

That it runs at all is a miracle in itself...

This is one of the most stabile and effective games in history...only that new systems/hardware CAN cause problems for some unlycky ones to run the game....

While I understand what you're saying, the fact is that I have never owned a computer that could run this game smoothly... including both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards over the years, Intel and AMD processors, Windows XP and Windows 7, 32 and 64 bit. Something about it is just extremely temperamental.

For those with 400 series having low fps try this:

For some reason the cards do not like the new ranged weapon models in the 1.69 patch or the cloaks.

Disable cloaks by changing Visible Cloaks to 0 in nwnplayer.ini
Download the older models for the ranged weapons here: http://rapidshare.com/files/428825201/rangedfix.rar
Only about 280kb, just extract it into your override folder.

The only difference is the ranged weapons will no longer have bowstrings.

Still need to fix robes.

I'm having the same problem. I have xp sp3, radeon hd 4850 and core2 duo 3ghz and I'm getting 20-40 fps in City Core. I tried disabling cloaks/sound and messing with client CPU affinity, sound acceleration and hardware acceleration. Nothing works. I'm not using any mods, just clean install + 1.69 critical rebuild patch. Low fps and stuttering, the game is unplayable for me :( The fun fact is, I can run Dragon Age at max details with 8xAA and HD textures mod at perfect 60 fps with vsync... It's just like, the better your hardware the lower your fps be in NWN, do I need an amiga to run this game at 60 fps? -_-

EDIT: Ranged weapon models from the previous post fixed nothing for me.

EDIT2: I plugged my old radeon HD 2600 XT to see if there would be any difference aaaaand no.... Exact same fps.

EDIT3: I tried installing the graphic driver without the CCC but it didn't change anything. Then I rolled back to the oldest compatible drivers - catalyst 8.10 and it actually raised the fps by about 5. I tried even older drivers but they just won't install. I think one of the older drivers, 7.x or even 6.x would fix the low fps completely and we could have over 9000 fps just like we should... I give up on this game.

I'm experiencing low FPS as well, Its not unplayable, I'm getting around 20-25 FPS when outdoors with no overrides on the highest in game video settings. My system is a few years old. Its running XP with a P4 3.2 with a 512 mb nvidia 8400 and 2 gb of ram. You would think a game this old would be playing perfectly with high FPS on this system. Once I start adding mods things get worse. NWNCQ doesnt really effect it to bad, I lose a few frames but NWshaders really bogged it down to 10 fps or so. It looks great with nwshader but the chuggy visuals are stopping me from using it. I have tried the cloak fix but that didnt do anything, I tried changing the sound acceleration and that didn't do anything either. I am getting better FPS playing borderlands than in this game. anyone know how to get this problem fixed ?
