I have worked my way through the original campaign of NWN 2 until I have reached Highcliff Castle Ruins. I have cleared the ruins up to the locked door but cannot get through the door to continue. I have tried picking the lock with +1 and +3 picks in my inventory but I only get success is not possible (max. 23 instead of the required 28). I have also tried to bash the door but it has resisted any damage. Any ideas/advice for getting through the door so I can continue the game?

Did you try picking the lock with Neeshka? She should be able to pick a DC 28 lock.

Something is very wrong then. A DC 28 lock is pickable in a pinch by a 1st level character. Neeshka should be recruited no lower than 4th level, so such a lock should be downright trivial for her. What exactly are Neeshka's lockpicking modifiers?

That seems extremely low, but if you have +1 lockpicks it should be sufficient. Neeshka has +4 to lock picking from her high dexterity. 3 ranks + 4 dexterity bonus + 1 lockpick + 20 (maximum roll) = 28.

I suppose the only thing left to check for is if Neeshka is suffering some kind of status ailment or penalty. Does she have any effect that's reducing her stats (she should have 18 dexterity)? Any curse or other nasty effect? Is she wearing armor that's heavier than leather (chain shirt and studded leather offer better protection, but penalize rogue skills)?

Alternately, you could try buffing Neeshka up. If you've recruited Elanee her Cat's Grace spell will buff Neeshka's dexterity and give a further +2 bonus to the lockpicking skill.

You didn't mention what class you are, but I assume you have at least one level of rogue if you're trying to pick locks. Are you a pure rogue like Neeshka? Otherwise there has to be some difference between your picking attempts. Even at level 1, a rogue would have +4 lockpicking skills, and with the d20 roll you would be capable of a DC 24 roll (at level 1), but you reported your max roll as 23.
The Orginal orginal campaign is so so imho
But we all have at least played through it once (I did back when NWN first came out)

Doing something like SOU -> HOU -> Sands of Fate 1 -> Sands of Fate 2 -> Sands of Fate 3
Is better.. shrug

level 1 to 40+++ experience with continuing story.\
That is a lot of play time with one char..

I also enjoy playing with PRC though shrug

As a followup, just so it's known here, I just went through the OC up to the point of meeting Neeshka. She begins with +9 to Open Lock, which is some time before you reach Highcliff. Again, if she only has +3 in your version, there's something very wrong.
Also, some doors cannot be picked or bashed. You need to have the key, pull a lever, or find some other solution.
