@ etb
yes I have tried using wine to install the thing
before that i literally copied the whole NWN folder from my windows install (then applied the three patches)
I dont know how to proceed.
am i supposed to run NWN through ./nwn or ./nwmain?

As far as I recall they both work. One starts the menu the other starts the game directly.

./nwmain
./nwmain: error while loading shared libraries: libmss.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
./nwn and dmclient run
./nwn gave the problems mentioned in my first post

Once again I am going by memory, but it should be a game file.
Try this command in the installation directory.
$ find -name 'libmss.so.6'

libmss.so.6 in a correct installation is inside the directory miles. The file comes from to archive nwclientgold.tar.gz .
I can only assume you did something wrong while installing. Try again following the first post carefully.

My mistake. Then it is not a problem of libmss.... And I checked you have to use nwn to start the game.
Anyhow, try reinstalling. Do not copy the whole installation directory, but only the files listed.

"Anyhow, try reinstalling. Do not copy the whole installation directory, but only the files listed."
ummm which files?
edit:
so i think i copied enough folders
ambient, override, data, music, etc
same error when trying to start a newgame or load
(a proper list though would still be appreciated, as i probably don't know what im doing :P)

Sorry for being rude, but do you actually read what I write?
I wrote the list twice, in the first post of mine and as answer as your first post. Here it is again:
Prepare a new wineprefix, install the game, patch the game with the 1.69 patch (I am not sure it is still needed, gog might included it... but do it just in case).
And move this files or folders in the nwn linux installation directory:
-----------------< START FILE LIST
ambient chitin.key data dialog.tlk dmvault hak localvault modules music nwm override saves servervault texturepacks xp1.key xp2.key
-----------------< END FILE LIST
unpack the three linux port files in order:
$ tar xzf ~/nwnlinux/nwclientgold.tar.gz
$ tar xzf ~/nwnlinux/nwclienthotu.tar.gz
$ tar xzf ~/nwnlinux/English_linuxclient169_xp2.tar.gz
copy the key file and test with fixinstall. Finally try to start with nwn (do not use nwnmain).
I tried yesterday and I got no problems. Try to follow the first post _carefully_.
And do not forget to test with md5sum the involved installers to ensure we are using the same stuff.

maybe my initial download of nwnlinux/English_linuxclient169_xp2.tar.gz was no good (i recompressed it into a tar.xz so i couldn't check its md5 )
in anycase doing it in the exact order as you just prescribed worked (excluding the wine part, I dual boot so i just grabbed the data from my windows install)
"Sorry for being rude, but do you actually read what I write? "
I guess i need new glasses, i somehow totally skipped the part where you mentioned the files needed to be copied
thanks so much. It works albeit with a few unexplained crashes here and there.

Hi,
With GOG's NWN version there is actually no need to bother with the big downloads and long installation.
Using diff I've compared all the files of English_linuxclient169_xp2.tar.gz, nwclientgold.tar.gz and nwclienthotu.tar.gz with their NWN Diamond's counterparts and the only differing files make 6MB in total. The rest of the 550MB worth of files are identical bytes to bytes to GOG's files.
I've put them all into one archive:
https://rapidshare.com/files/1496368573/NWN_Diamond_GOG_Linux.tar.gz
with modified fixinstall and nwn scripts that allows the native version to coexist with Wine, by renaming the miles folder to miles_win and creating a symbolic link. nwn takes care of making the link point to miles_linux before launching NWN, and restores the link to miles_win once it's closed. This shall be particularly useful if you intend to use the toolset, and there is no other way as both the Windows and Linux versions of Miles are hardcoded to look into the miles folder of NWN, regardless of their location.
tl;dr traditional install - redundant files = only 6 MB, and a harmless modification to allow the toolset to coexist with the native nwn (don't forget to run fixinstall)
Hoping that it will be useful.
