. . .and every time it's crashed repeatedly on my computer. And not just crashed, but blue screen of death crashed for some reason. I'm so sick of being in the town of Neverwinter that if I had the Fallout option of nuking it so I wouldn't have to run around seeing the same tilesets and NPC characters anymore I would do it in a heartbeat.

I haven't looked into a game guide because I just don't know if I can stomach another attempt to finally not have to run through the Peninsula or Docks districts again.

So my question is once I've done the four or five zones in Neverwinter will I be able to finally leave this godforsaken first town and do some actual adventuring?

Considering my situation, should I fire up the expansion that allows me to start a new character in that one (can't remember which one it was, perhaps someone can enlighten me). Or will I, if I just power through Neverwinter, will I finally be able to to enjoy the world of this game? I've already got it installed, and I recently beat the Peninsula district and haven't gone back in like two or three weeks because the trauma of my computer nearing its crash zone incapacitated my will to play on. Just want some info if I will see the light at the end of the tunnel after I've finally completed the first quest where I have to retrieve the $%$%$%$%$% waterdavian creatures for the eighth time.

Don't play the OC. Start with SoU, where you'll go through the fun (?) of starting a brand-new character and going from there. The OC isn't worth any hassles you're experiencing, but putting a character through SoU followed by HotU is definitely worth the time.

Yeah, you leave the city and do adventuring. But are you saying that you had trouble with your own CD copy of NWN which doesn't work right, or are you saying that the GoG version is crashing on you?

Well, the OP said he last played a few weeks ago, so I'm assuming that he's playing a CD copy?

I have no idea what to say, though, I've never heard of this problem. Could it be a video crashing your computer?

I would actually NOT start with SoU. Fun, but VERY painful start since you don't get the free lvl3 you get from the OC.

I would actually suggest either Kingmaker (same problem, but flows better) or just diving into HotU for a bit.

No, not the GOG version, the Diamond DVD version. However I just found out there were a number of copies that came with issues. So I just updated it and hopefully it will work fine. I don't know, but I've made sure to update all my drivers and I actually was playing the game on far lower textures than I'm capable of just from fear of it exploding on me again. The crashes I do remember occurred on the third level of the prison in the Peninsula District (where the color turns sort of red), and the other time when I was running around the Docks. I remember these times of course since they were times I had to do a system restore on my computer but it happened a couple other times.

I hope I'm not scarring any potential GOG buyers though. On top of reading about an issue with the patching on the Diamond edition, there was also an issue with certain DVD/CD drives. Well my laptop has had nothing but problems with the disc drive so I'm sure coupled with whatever issue the DVD version of this game had simply provided the knockout punch to my computer. I'm sure the GOG version doesn't have this problem. Thanks. I knew I was able to create a new character in the expansion, just couldn't remember which one. I think if I can't stomach the city of Neverwinter any longer I'll just create a new character and jump into the expansions. I'm just one of those gamers that's like knowing he's played everything in a game and it gnaws at me if I have to do that with this game. I guess the one good thing I can say from all this is I really enjoy the game. If it wasn't as good a game as it is, I don't think anybody would be able to stomach what I've gone through with this--and am doing once more!

NWN suffered from problems with water settings on some ATI cards, and in general with water settings, often setting things like the shiny water options to minimum would help the crashing problems.

Interestingly this game also runs natively under linux and much better than it does under windows on the exact same machine :)

The strangest issue it had was when dual-core machines were new... the game would stutter frequently as it would run off one core, then a second one would kick in as the load increased. I had to start the game, start Task Manager then set the task affinity of nwnmain.exe (from memory) to just one core.

I think this was fixed in a later patch, but it goes to show this game has had some unique issues in its time!

I believe there was a tool to allow you to do this. Java based, I believe it was called Leto from the City of Doors Initiative or Codi. Obviously, the original sites (CoDI and Leto's blog) are long gone, but it is archived on nwvault:

As a veteran owner of NWN, I will give ye this advice:TURN OFF SHINY WATER. It is responsible for more graphics glitches, apparent bugs, and general choppiness than anything else you can name for NWN.

I'd also make sure you're running the game in Compatibility mode. When I got my current laptop I had to change settings to run NWN in Windows XP mode rather than WIN7, my current OS.


If neither of those options work, consider reinstalling the game files and then update to the latest patches.

This is likely related to the missing files (textures) in the GOG install. You should download and install the <span class="podkreslenie">Critical Rebuild Patch</span> if you have not yet.

I do confirm that the problem with skin textures is due to missing files in the GOG installation. Download and install the 1.69 Critical Rebuild patch, it will fix it.
Maybe the original poster should try this too for his crashing troubles...
