A quick question... I read that if I miss out on completing the special quests for the henchmen in chapter one, I can't help them later in the game. Does that mean I can't level them up in Chapter 2 and the rest of the game? If I did not complete their quests in chapter one, I know I will not get their special items, but can they improve anyway, for combat and such?

They will level just fine. Only downside is you wont get their special items as you already know. You can still use them.
