The character creation is pretty overwhelming for this game and im having a bit of trouble finding builds so i'll ask here

whats a fun build to go through the game with?
That's kind of a big question, and it hinges a lot on how you define fun...

Some may get the biggest kicks out of, say, playing a wizard and managing a wide array of spells, wands etc - but that's not for the novice. Others may find a gnome barbarian an absolute hoot.

Me, I like monks. There's nothing quite like beating a dragon to death with your bare hands...

The only other thing I would say at this point is that it's easy to read discussions of people who've been playing it for years talking about making the perfect character, using acronyms you've never heard of and so on, and it can sound a bit overwhelming. Don't worry about all that. Pick something you think sounds fun and give it a try. But don't try to generalise too much, it's probably better to focus on doing one thing well than lots of things badly.
I'd say go for a Mage of your choice.

Warlock is pretty good choice for a player who is new to limited spells etc. With warlock you can spam your spells all day and it's actually quite fun to mess around. I played my first playthrough with a warlock and I only had problems in some boss fights where you are alone.

If you go for a Wizard or something, you're gonna have a lot of fun with different kind of spells but you'll be spending a lot of time fighting, resting, fighting, resting. And in a lot of areas you can't rest so you'll be in there with only a few spells - But you have your party so it's fine.

I can't say much about melee classes, but try to avoid thief/stealth based classes. It's all fun and games in the early game, but during mid/late game you will do less damage than a melee warlock.

Don't worry about prestige classes to be honest - just main a base class. To get a prestige build right you need to plan ahead which is really really hard for new players since you need to pick certain skills to unlock them. And the level up system isn't going to hold your hands either.

There's a lot of builds on Google, but... good luck with that. There's only a handful that will tell you step by step what to level up first.

So yeah! Stick with a basic class, but avoid stealth classes like a plaque.
It just doesn't work right with this rule system.
Go to this site: http://nwn2db.com/

It has a ton of premade builds (with people being allowed to make comments on the builds). It also has a builder function so you can pre-plan your builds. Find a build that has a good rating, follow it to a tee, and you should do well. Cheers!

Thanks for build site link. That thing is addictive. I'm getting ready to start MoTB and have redone my Level 18 starting character twice already... No more little bit of this, little bit of that for me! (Without knowing your favorite party members and what they bring to the table, it's hard jumping right in at Level 18 and picking your specialties.)
Nice websight... this is my pick for a melee nwn2 character.
If you're playing through the OC and MotB, you don't need a "powerbuild" to be successful. That being said, there are a lot of quality builds floating around out there (the link already provided is an excellent source). I played through it the first time with a Favored Soul/Paladin, mostly to see how Favored Soul compared to cleric.

It's not only unnecessary, but can be less fun and maybe even less effective. Many powerbuilds focus on player vs player level 30 combat, the journey to get there might be an unplayable mess.

That's true. I wouldn't recommend anything particularly complicated for a first time regardless, especially for someone unfamiliar with the mechanics.

If your a beginner i would suggest Paladin. easiest to play, powerful melee, and divine magic (helpful to heal, kicks the undeads ass).
Personally, if you want a divine melee combatant, I'd rather recommend a melee cleric over a paladin. I find them to be more flexible and fun, and have much more powerful healing and undead-turning powers, as well as a lot more buffs and offensive spells. They can wear full plate just like paladins and have self-buffs that give them the same base attack bonus as a fighter of the same level.
