I used to be able to play this game, but when I downloaded and re-installed it I keep getting an app crash error as soon as I launch the .exe. Already re-downloaded and got the same thing. Any tips? Running as Admin doesn't help either.

Can you provide more info about your machine's specifications?

Have you seen the support page for this game? You may need to install older DirectX packages; you can get them . You can follow the directions on the [url=http://www.gog.com/support/neverwinter_nights_diamond_edition/frequent_crashes_or_crash_at_startup]support page pertaining to this particular issue.

I'm getting an immediate crash on trying to start this game up also. Tried:

1) Launching game from Galaxy client.
2) Launching game from Start menu, both normal and safe mode.
3) Opened up a command prompt, tried running nwn.exe, nwloader.exe, nwmain.exe

All crash, however the loader starts up before eventually launching the game which crashes. No error messages or useful info. I tried changing the resolution with nwconfig.exe also which had no effect.


I'll try the Direct X suggestion above, but it doesn't make much sense for GOG to install a non-working game if they know it needs an alternate DX, they should install that from the game's installer so it just works for everyone by default. I'll contact support about it though.

Thanks for posting the suggestion here for people to find BTW!

Do you have an ATI card? If so, try renaming nwmain.exe to something else (eg nwmain2.exe) and running it then, preferably in XP compatibility mode.

Yeah, I renamed it nwmainAMD.exe and that got past the initial problem. Game is still very crashtastic and unreliable though, haven't dug through all of the problems yet. I was exploring some of the options on GOG's support pages, more stuff to try later. Makes me wonder why they don't apply some of these workarounds by default though. ie: rename the executable nwmainGOG.exe or something, it should then work on every system regardless of video hardware vendor. Another issue was DirectX version... they should just go ahead and install the correct one when the game installs like many other games do that they sell, why force the user to dig through support forums and manually download that, when other games do it automatically? Just a user hassle and a tech support burden on there end from all the people that slam into the issues.

NWN2 worked much better, I tested it right after.

Not a huge deal ATM though, I was just beta testing the GOG overlay and it was the first time I've had NWN not work, but I haven't ran it for a long time either so... ;)

As you know, older games show their age after a few years pass. Yeah, for older games in particular I'm surprised how many just work out of the box honestly. I even get 2560x1600 out of the old 90s game "Blood" which is shocking. Overall most games work well, but troubleshooting and finding solutions for some is not unreasonable either. Wherever it is possible to work around or detect and workaround an issue automatically though that'd be definitely preferential.

I haven't gotten to test the DX suggestion yet as I've moved on to testing other games at the moment, but NWN is still in the list for the next testing pass. As I find problems and hopefully find solutions/workarounds or even just suggestions I haven't tried yet I am adding them to per-game pages on my local Wiki for future reference on how to make the games work well on my systems etc. Nice to have a little local cheat sheet like that. :) GOG support is also great with coming up with workarounds too. So far, for any game that I've contacted support and/or the forums and/or my own googling and experimentation I can't think of any games that I haven't managed to get running to one degree or another, so that's good. :)

Sometimes there are 3rd party mods or fixes too that greatly enhance a game's stability/features/gameplay such as the high res mods for Baldur's Gate games for example. Lots of goodies out there. :P

Firstly what OS are you using with this game? as each OS has a different fix/work around.

For windows 7 & 8.1: it's been best to go to properties and set it to run in admin AND compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 2 (some people have had luck with service pack 3)
