fjdgshdkeavd: The real problem with combat is movement. Is there any way to force your character to run? If you click nearby, your character will walk; if you click further away, your character will run. This lack of precision is absurd.
What you're doing is holding your mouse button down. If you hold your mouse down, how far away the mouse is from your character determines his speed.

But if you're just clicking to go to a point, then he'll always run (unless you set the Always Run option off -- or if you hold the shift or maybe ctrl key).

If you haven't tried Temple of Elemental Evil, then that might be your next stop. The combat engine is the best implementation of DnD I've ever seen.

It happens regardless of whether you click nearby or hold down the mouse button nearby.

Thank you for the recommendation! I think it will be the next game I buy!
