The new Myst won't start on my PC. It gives the error message "DX12 is not supported on your system. Try running without the -dx12 or -d3d12 command line argument".

I get this message when I launch without any command line argument.

My PC:

Windows 7 Pro 64
24 GBytes of RAM
1.5 TBytes free on HDD
PC is a Dell OptiPlex 7040

Well.

Windows 7 doesn't have Direct X 12. So you can either use the -dx11 flag to attempt to run it, or you can join the rest of us in modern computing.

I agree with Darvond. It's 2021 and even I (a huge fan of WIn7) have moved on. I believe your computer has integrated graphics which is always troublesome when it comes to games.

<sandbox>Win7 is 12 years old, Win10 is 6 years old, making it "modern computing" - what al laugh. I bought my first computer in 1978. Now THAT computer (TRS-80 w/ 4,000 Bytes RAM) is ancient. Win7 is still in use because it is such a good OS, being 6 years older than Win10 is chump and I'd be happy to pay Micro$oft to keep it updated.</sandbox>

You may be right about the integrated graphics. Thanks. I was having an issue interpreting the error message since I wasn't using either of those command line arguments it said to omit. I actually have two OptiPlex 7040's, very close to identical except one has an aftermarket video card. When I tried that one and ADDED a flag (-dx11), Myst runs just fine. The one using the integrated graphics card.starts up all the way to choosing Random or Original puzzles, and then freezes on the star display when you select one.

1979? What was it? There weren't any IBM clones to build that long ago! Built my first clone in 1990. You an IT professional? I am a retired senior software engineer myself.

Got Myst working fine on the other OptiPlex yesterday afternoon after an uninstall/re-install. Maybe this will help others, so I'll detail what I did:

- Ran dxdiag to ensure I have DX11 installed (I did)
- Complete, fresh install, but did NOT launch it
- Copied Api-ms-win-downlevel-kernel32-l2-1-0.dll ffrom C:\Windows\System32\CompatTel to <folder where you installed Myst>\Myst\Myst\Binaries\Win64
- changed the 'A' in Api-ms-win-downlevel-kernel32-l2-1-0.dll to lower-case
- Added command line argument " -dx11" (without quotes, but be sure you put the space in) to the Myst shortcut "Target"
- Used this modified shortcut to launch Myst

One other tihing. I don't know if this is true on other OS installations, but Myst is not remembering that you chose "Keyboard" from start to start, you have to go in and re-pick keyboard every time.

Hopefully this will help those who prefer Win7

I frankly don't understand all of those reviews that complain aboit no 7. This is no different from the situation with "Necromunda Hired Gun." People must remember if a game uses Unreal Engine 4, then it'll run fine in most cases.

The first kit I put together was a MITS Altair 80 (1977). Back then computer people were considered "hobbyists" and you had to be a jack of all trades: electrical engineering, computer science, programmer/designer, a scavenger (parts), reader of research papers, etc...

My first clone used the first 8086 chip at 10 Mhz I put together in 1979. It's been an interesting ride.

I have the same problem with Windows 10. It gives me a Directx 11/12 error message. When I go to DirectX to download and install 12, the installer says I have a newer or equivalent version and shuts down. So, I am unable to run the program.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Are any of you running the program successfully?

Run dxdiag.exe and report back.

I have Myst 2021 running on Win7 through GOG Galaxy.

Go to GOG Galaxy and then the page for Myst (2021)
Go to the settings menu right next to the play button then Manage Installation\Configure
Click on features then make sure "Custom executables / arguments" is checked
Scroll down and click on Add another executable / arguments
For the executable select C:\GOG Games\Myst\Myst.exe or where-ever you installed the game.
In the arguments box put in "-dx11" without the quotes.
Set whatever label you want then click okay

To run the game you go to the settings menu next to the play button then Additional Executables. Click on the label you entered.

On my system it runs and syncs now.
