After spending 3 hours dicking around with different compatibility settings, updating drivers, re-installing, turning off anti-virus, bringing back the broomstick of the wicked witch of the north, I have come to the conclusion that this game is just going to continue to freeze up on Windows 7 64 bit no matter what version of Quicktime I run - isn't it?

And throw in the fact that I have to get technical support on the forums to find out how to send and email for product support and I realize that if there was a way to make Myst run on my computer they would just frickin' tell me how already and not keep sending me off on endless fool's errands.

Too bad because the game used to be fun to play and it just shouldn't be that hard to take me there. $6 was cheap, but how much would I have to pay for a version that actually works?

Hm, haven't experienced anything like this on Windows 7. What kind of rig are you working with, and when does the game start freeing?

Thank you for your interest. Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, AMD processor 4 GB RAM, 64 Bit, AMD 760G video driver. Downloaded with Firefox browser.

Game freezes after a few operations in the Clock Tower (just like Anne below, whose problem is also unresolved) or in the time machine, again, after a few operations of the controls.
Well, if they can't get it working for you then they will give you your money back. Sadly, a small number of the games sold here do have problems running on some systems (King of Dragon Pass is the only other one I'm aware of, though I'm sure there are more in other genres), but there is now the guarantee of your money back if they can't get it working. Worst case scenario: you've wasted a bit of time trying to get it to work. Each computer is different and many different issues can create the same result: the game crashing. They've been getting you to try various methods of making your computer run the game more like an older system would have. It's not a fool's errand: in, maybe, 9 in 10 cases that method works. Occasionally the issue is something completely different, though, and something which there's no reasonable way to identify. There's no way to tell whether a given crash is going to be solvable by using the methods you've tried, except to try them, and they generally do work. But as I said, unlike certain other distributors I could mention, GOG has a generous (especially given that it's DRM free) refund policy which means they'll give you your money back if you keep doing what they say and it doesn't work.

On a more practical standpoint, I don't suppose you or a relative has another computer you could test it on, and see whether it crashes on that or not?

Incidentally, all the things you mentioned having been told to try have worked for me in getting games to run in the past, so they weren't a waste of time. In fact, it's remarkable how often the wicked witch's broomstick can make a stubborn program suddenly behave itself :P

(Ok, maybe that last sentence wasn't true, but the rest was!)

Thank you for your thoughtful post. A few related points: I feel vindicated that a lot of people are having problems - see the thread under trying to get it to run under windows 8.

I'm glad they would give me a refund so that I know it wasn't a ripoff, just complications.

Lastly, I found out you can buy an old playstation with the Myst game. I did that. But even that seems to have a glitch with an elevator button that doesn't work! So hopefully I got the information I needed in the elevator in the GOG version and can use it on the playstation. However, now, which ever combination of quicktime etc. I have on my PC crashes all the time and I don't want to start running all those combinations again.

It runs 100% fine for me in Windows 8.1 on an AMD system and the latest QuickTime from Apple.

Just a suggestion, but if you've recieved your refund at this point then you might like to consider buying the other version of Myst 1 (Masterpiece Edition, or Realmyst, whichever you didn't buy before). You never know: whatever the problem is with your setup may not cause issues on the other version. If it doesn't work, then...well, you'll have to go through the process of getting a refund again, but you might decide it's worth a try.
Have you tried running the game as an administrator? Seems to solve all kinds of totally unrelated problems with all kinds of games. It's how I get RealMyst to run properly in Vista, without it the game gecomes terribly slow and unplayable.

I used to have a problem with realMYST not running on my WIndows 7 PC. Turned out that I had to find both the game and setup *.exe files in the GOG/realMYST folder and change them to compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3.

Might not be the same issue, but runs like a dream now and just about to complete my third play through...
Have considered running it through an emulator? VirtualBox provides 3D acceleration that would work for realMyst. You could probably follow these HowTo Geek steps to get it configured: 3D in VirtualBox

Even just having a win98 environment might be enough to get Myst:ME working correctly.

If you don't have old install discs laying around, you could also try Linux with Wine. Wine's AppDB has gold level status for both Myst:ME and realMyst

Be sure your BIOS has Virtualization support enabled (vt-x for Intel, amd-v for AMD)

Update: I've installed XP on VirtualBox to see if i could get realMyst working. Unfortunately it does not like the VirtualBox emulated Direct3D device. There might be some way to just force it to run, but I don't know away of doing that.

There is still the Wine route.
