I agree with Mxh178.

Real Myst enables players who are (or have become) too demanding about graphics to play (or replay) Myst, and that is great. Real Myst stays very close to the original game, which I appreciated. On the other hand, the improvements in Real Myst are as little as questionable.

I cannot see the point of free movement and free look. In Real Myst, you move so fast that the universe looks small and its exploration seems frustrating. The original Myst was a slow game, moving from one place to another was not easy but it was part of the game and its atmosphere. You had to think and memorize every detail before moving. I love Myst so much that I cannot tolerate any alteration to it.

As for the question, I guess it depends on the gamer's tolerance to old graphics/gameplays. Personally, I would vote for Myst Masterpiece Edition.

bvguthrie: I'm fairly new to GOG, and I'm thinking about buying Myst. I heard good things about it when I was a kid in the 1990s, but I never tried it out. So would you recommend I get the Masterpiece Edition or Real Myst?
A little about my gaming habits: I have played very little in the way of old adventure games or old puzzle games, though I have played newer puzzle games, like Portal. I generally like games with good stories, the need for thinking, attractive visuals, and interesting choices.

It's pretty nice of you to let other people use your account, but still I'm sure that it's not quite legal though. Just because the games on GOG are DRM-free doesn't mean you're allowed to share them with other people, esp. those you don't know personally.

Please have in mind that every distributor does have the possibilty to add DRM to their products (just like Steam). So GOG's "copy protection" is solely based on trust, which no one of us should take advantage of.

Robyn Miller (one of the two creators of the original game) on realMyst: "I only saw realMyst after it was released. As a remake, it was a lapse of reason and directionless; overt merchandising of the original Myst. It definitely wasn't how we originally envisioned Myst, as was promoted." (in an interview quoted by Wikipedia).

I have not played it though. Maybe it is a better introduction to the series than ME (which feels outdated but still has an incredible atmosphere).
