Myst Masterpiece Edition
At first I had problems with videos not playing and saving crashing the game, but I followed the instructions on the forums re: compatibility settings. Sound is smooth with these settings too, but not with win95 for example. I didn't use that old installer that forces win95 compatibility mode.
However, the game locks up/freezes randomly while playing, some minutes after loading/starting a new game. It has happened on the map screen, while moving around, interacting with something etc.
It doesn't seem like a very common issue, but surely someone else here has experienced it?
Current compatilibity settings:
XP SP2/3 (seems identical)
Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition
Run program as administrator
I have the latest Nvidia drivers (192.61) and DirectX. Win7 x64, DEP is only on for essential programs, installer passed integrity check, UAC is off.

Same problem with me. First, I had the problem with the movies not running but by changing the settings as posted in another thread, that problem was solved. But then this problem started, the random freezes. I'm running Vista 64. I can't continue with the game because of the freeze ups. If anyone has a suggestion or if GOG is monitoring these forums, some help would be appreciated.
I was first brought to MYST in 2007 when I bought the "20th Anniversary Edition" With Myst 1, 2 , & 3. Because of this, I've spent years working out compatability settings for it. Myst and Riven are especially annoying when it comes to quicktime settings.
Like I said,I have the 2003 DVD versions, so this might not work, but under compatability settings try checking the box for "disable scaling of high dpi settings" or something like that. if that doesn't work, could you please tell me what version of quicktime you are using?
You're a blessing BobBlusoe.....your suggestion worked like a charm, I'm back up and running and with no CTD's. Good gaming to you!
Glad to help! Myst and Riven's issues are mostly caused by Quicktime compatability issues, which I don't think were fixed by the GOG team because honestly there's no cure all solution to all computers. I've tried the myst series on like 10 of my family's computers so I know a lot of different things to try.
If you have any other questions, just ask. I bet I've had the problem before.
I have the same issue but on XP, it does appear to be random and the game reguarly freezes, notmally when I haven't saved for a while...
I had the same issue on an xp computer. Can I ask what compatability settings you have the game set to? and what version of quicktime are you using?

I'm using version 7.6.5 and the game is not running under any compatibility settings.
try running it in Windows 95 compatability mode with disable visual themes checked.
The game can't handle multiple core processors. If your experiencing random crashes when quicktime is doing stuff use the task manager to show all user processes then select the riven executable and set the processor affinity to just one of the cores.

Unfortunately, you need to do this each time you start the program.
Hello Folks,
I had the same problem with randomly freeze while playing Myst Masterpiece.
In the end I could solve it. As I am not 100% sure how I did it please find my all the basic steps and findings below.
I also listed the things I have NOT done, as in various forums those things were recommended (at least for me these tips had no effect)

My System: Virtualbox running on a Ubuntu 14.04 system
with "VirtualBox Guest Additions 4.3.10r93012"

WinXP (SP3) installed (no iTunes or Windows Media Player installed)

Myst Masterpiece installed (but I did not install the DX6 and QT4 which came with Myst)
instead DX9c installed afterwards
as well as QuickTime 6.5.2 (which was recommended in some other forums)

Two exe-Files are available to start Myst Masterpiece:
For both I changed the settings as follows (right click-> Preferences):
-limitation of display resolution 640x480 enabled
-compatibility mode enabled as below:
myst9x.exe (comp: both win95 or win98/Me worked) -> saving in Myst took longer
mystmaster2k-d.exe (comp. mode: win2000) -> saving in Myst seems to be quicker
(limitation to 256 colors not enabled; deaktivation of visual design not enabled)
Also it was not necessary to run Myst as "Admin", which is anyway difficult for a VM

My basic VM Settings:
System: 512MB RAM allocated and only 1 Core used
video: 128MB RAM works fine
audio: pulse, alsa and oss worked fine
audio Controller: ICH AC97 works fine (Intel & SB16 brought no sound at all)
Myst DVD mounted as ISO

For some reason I had sound problems in the beginning for myst (stuttering sound) such I read somewhere that it would be a good idea to disable the Audio Hardware Acceleration (WinXP->Setting->System Settings->Sounds->Audio Tab->advanced->System Performance->Hardware Acceleration)

In fact this was a stupid idea to disable HW acceleration, as this stressed my CPU too much and made Myst crash/freeze. The sound became better, but due to this Myst started to freeze randomly while I was just moving around. Hence, do not disable Audio Hardware Acceleration at all and accept a little sound stuttering.
As a minimum you should have "Basic HW Acceleration" enabled (I left "converting quality" untouched to "high")

Things which were recommened in other forums (to solve Myst Freeze), which I found had NO effect on my system:

Changing Qucktime Settings:
-to change Video Settings to "save Mode (GDI only)"
-to use waveOut instead of DirectSound
-to increase audio FIFO buffer to 2000

I am really happy to play and enjoy Myst now, and hope the same for you.
