Can't find the appropriate place to comment but just wanted to say -- I downloaded the Myst Masterpiece game which obviously was a "redo" adding some things and pretty much messing up the whole game. I ended up deleting it and downloading the original Myst -- felt like an old friend had come to visit. Granted the graphics are dated -- but you know what? I love the sounds that always made Myst games special -- it's the challenges that count along with the echoes of water dripping, bells, gongs, etc.... I just wanna say -- don't anybody mess with my Myst games --- thanks!
So you're mad at Cyan games for taking a game that's nearly 30 years old and giving it a shine polish in their own studio?

How dare Cyan improve the clunky game play! Who do they think they are!

That looks absolutely stunning! How exciting!
I saw the trailer. It looks amazing!! However, there was a problem in the lower right corner. There appeared a "close" button, labelled "I do not want to see this again"> Why would anyone not want to see it again?

The original (1993) is long gone.

realMyst was delisted in 2018.

By "original Myst," which Myst are you referring to?

Ah im not much informed about MYST re-releases/remasters i meant 2D Masterpiece Edition.

Mostly trying to get original releases on GOG before they are delisted and replaced with remakes/remasters.
This trend has accelerated a lot. (not just delisting because of remakes but licensing issues too (cars, music etc))

Kind of naively thought that GOG (good old games) would work as substitute for collecting retail big boxes of old games.
If at least studios/publishers have kept originals for sale or bundled it together with remake/remaster.

Long time ago i have bought empty CD-Rs spindle there was MYST masterpiece edition (UBI/Sony?) game with it.
It was kind of unexpected to find game bundled with empty CD-R spindle pack :D

Thanks.

Well, the good news is that realMyst is the only Myst game (aside from the original original 1993 version) that's been removed from any stores. And I'm pretty sure with enough digging, you might find the 1993 version out there somewhere.

None of the others are in any plans to be removed/delisted anytime soon.

Speaking of this - why do games get delisted?

Does this come from the IP holders?

It's a shame - like the original poster - sometimes I want to revisit the childhood memories and play these older games as they were. (Most of my library is Sierra games like Space Quest, King's Quest, etc). So I definitely enjoy revisiting the past - and sometimes hearing that odd beeping sound that passes as music, or even clunky controls is kind of fun to relive.

As a side note to add - I had MYST on my wish list and got an email that it was available. And it's not the original which is what brought me here to look this up. :)

Well, in the case of Myst, it comes from their own hand, since Cyan own it.

There's two major reasons.

1) The more technical reasons; that maintaining such old things on new code would be a technical nightmare. (See Creatures, Interstate 76, etc.) I'm not even sure if modern graphical cards support the low resolutions or color depths anymore.

2) The Canon reason. These old titles no longer even remotely match to the idea of which represents the MYST universe.

its mostly at IP owner whims (it could be license issues, ownership, technical reasons too or just business decision) its kind of sad, Movies have their own archive what video games have? will it be preserved in 50 years future in some national archive for future generations in its original form for each release? This still isnt solved by game industry i guess and i think they are already late.
My first post. I did once own the original Myst that I ran on Win XP SP2. Question is will these old DOS based games play on Win 7 or Win 10?
