Hey, I saw another topic on movies in Myst not working and I'm having the same problem. The difference is the other poster's solution was to change to Windows XP compatibility mode, but that didn't work for me. Right now I'm trying to play Riven. The opening intro with Atrus appears for about a half-second and then it just cuts right to when you have control of the game. I uninstalled QuickTime and installed the one that came with the disc and that didn't fix it.
Choosing "Run program as administrator" doesn't work either. Could it be a video card problem? I have a Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family and the driver is up to date. Anything else for me to try?

Hi,
For Riven, i applied these compatibility settings to the shortcut.
.Windows95
.640x480
.Disable visual themes
.Disable desktop composition
.Run as Admin.
This in with gog's version on Win7 64 bit, can't say if it will work for the DVD version as i never tried to install it on Win7.
Appreciate the response. I tried those but the same thing happened. I saw Atrus for a split second, then it skipped all over everything.
I just installed Riven on an older laptop and it seemed to work fine, movies and all. I had to install Direct X 9.0 on that one; is there a way I can downgrade from D10 on my newer machine? Could that be the problem?
The older machine has XP.

I don't know for sure but i don't think so. As i understand it, DirectX 10 it's backwards compatible with 9.
Have you tried editing the mohawk.w32 file ? I remember that sometimes solved some problems with Riven.
Find the line,
fEnableAudioProxy=true
Change it to,
fEnableAudioProxy=false
and save the file.
I didn't do that, but I did this: On my other laptop, when I went to install QT from the Riven CD, it said a newer version already existed. So I figured what the heck, I'd upgrade QT on my new laptop. (I figured the movies weren't working anyway so what could it hurt?) So I downloaded QT7, unchecked all those boxes you suggested earlier, and Riven's intro movies played just fine, as did other animations I didn't see before (like the locked door right in the beginning.) Saving/loading didn't seem to be an issue at least just in testing. The only problem was when I hit Exit in the menu, the game froze up and I had to open the task manager to close the program.
So I guess it seems to be working now. Out of curiosity though, how do I edit that mohawk program? When I clicked on it, I got a "Windows cannot open file" message.

Ah, you got it working. That's good.
The file can be edited using NotePad. Right click, select 'Open With', and choose WordPad from the list.

No problem. Enjoy Riven ;)
I'm back! OK, game still seems to be working except now I'm experiencing random crash issues. Any idea on how to fix that?
Have you tried editing the mohawk.w32 file ?
Above you said you unchecked the compatibility settings. If you meant all of them maybe try to check some of them back to see if it makes a difference, and definitely keep 'Run as Admin' checked.
And maybe try safe mode on quicktime.
That's about it.

OK, I'll try fiddling with those. It'll be ironic if I finally get the movies working but little else does. ;)
The mohawk file, by the way, already had false for the enableaudoproxy. I also switched to safe mode in QT. I'll be back if the compatibility stuff fails to work.
