Yes, yet another thread about MYST crashing on 64-bit Windows 7. Yes, I looked around the forum. No, I didn't find a solution on ANY of them. (It's funny because I heard good things about the GoG version of the game. I bought it because the DVD version didn't work EITHER!!!)
Anyways, here's my problem: First off, I installed Myst Masterpiece Edition onto my PC into the default directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Myst Masterpiece Edition). I tried to boot the game normally, but the intro didn't play.
I turned on Windows XP compatibility mode along with visual themes disabled and run as admin enabled. It played well for a minute or two, and then it crashed in the middle of a video (and it KEPT crashing when I retried it).
THEN I switched to Windows 95 compatibility mode. It worked, but I am getting this god awful crackling noise when playing the game. Now I can deal with that every once in a while, but if it is happening constantly and it's not SUPPOSED to do that, then I have a problem haha. I have been in a Myst mood lately, and I'll be forever grateful if you can help me fix this.

I just bought Myst Masterpiece the other day. I'm also running Win 7 64-bit. I installed it in a different directory than default. My problem is when I launched it, it immediately put me on the ship dock...no intro or anything. I realize now that I don't have Quicktime installed on this system. That's probably why there was no intro, and possibly no other videos in the game would play.
What version of QT do you have installed? I've uninstalled MME for now, and am going to download/install Quicktime (not sure which version yet), then reinstall MME. Hopefully that will get it running properly.

To tell you the truth, I just said screw it and installed 32-bit Windows 7. It won't work really well if you use 64-bit. Install normal quicktime, put it in safe mode, and then run Myst in Windows 98 compatibility mode. It sounds like crap, but it works. It works fine for 32-bit though, since I just tried ;)

I'm not sure if anyone is still having this problem, but I found a solution!!!

I pulled my old myst disks out of a box and decided to install them and see if I could once again finish them. And of course I was having the same problem posted here!!!

This is what I did:

1. Uninstall Myst or Myst ME - whichever you have
2. Uninstall QuickTime - I used 'ControlPanel>Programs and Features' to do both of these
3. Go to 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64'
4. Scroll down and find "QuickTime.qts" and delete it - (Yes, Delete it!!!)
5. Restart your machine
6. Install your copy of Myst w/QuickTime provided on the disk
7. DO NOT update QuickTime when asked - just finish the install
8. Go back to "C:\Windows\SysWOW64" and find the "QuickTime.qts" file again
9. Right-click and copy this file
10. Go to your Myst folder - usually "C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubi Soft\Myst Masterpiece Edition (this was the situation in my case for Myst ME)
11. Paste the copied "QuickTime.qts" file in this directory
12. Restart your machine and run the game in Compatability Mode for Windows 98

Enjoy and I hope this helps the rest of those Myst fanatics in the world!!!!!

BTW - once you have the old QuickTime file that Myst ME needs to run in it's own directory, you can update Quicktime again and everything seems to still work fine!!!!

This is a great post, many thanks. I also had to set "Disable visual themes" in compatibility mode to be able to save games (and remove some artifacts from the window edges in-game).

Hi,

I've just created an account on gog.com and purchased this great game. While downloading it, I was browsing this forum and hoped I wouldn't have as many problems running it, and... maybe I am lucky but Myst works without any trouble for me on Windows 7 64-bit. The only thing I did was not to install in Program Files(x86), but that may not even have been necessary.

you could also use the nightly build of scummvm. this game works perfectly on it as far as i can tell.

Lol WELL, keep in mind I posted this in July last year ;P GOG.com probably made a patch for it or something that makes it work. I am currently in Windows 64-bit again and tried it. No problem. It crashes occasionally, but that's it. Plus, I save often so I don't have to worry about it much :)

I bought and installed Myst ME on Windows 7 64, Everything was fine till I got to the mechanical age and it locks itself up and freezes, No movement and sound just repeats itself.... Any Ideas?

Yeah, I'm trying to play this in Win7, 64bit, everything works fine with the default install, but it does just hang every so often (after an hour or more?), with the mouse cursor disappearing and the sound keeps on playing. Need to bring up Task Manager and end it.

Haven't found a better solution yet

sounds crazy i know but it seems not to work on 1080i

but can work on 1080

A friendly advice:
NEVER EVER INSTALL UNDER PROGRAM FILES.
Windows "protects" that folder, resulting in shit don't working as it should.
My copy works fine under windows 7 x64 when I don't install it under that directory. Be sure to have downloader the file correctly and installing quicktime lite too.

SOLVED: win 7 pro 64 bit
I'm running Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I've tried almost everything on all these threads and posts from numerous places. this is the only thing that worked. I just unclicked the mp3 coding box when installing quicktime. I then ran the game without using any compatibilities and it worked. I only ran the game 5 mins but there was absolutely no crashes. I did the clock tower without problems, the generator without problems and the stairs to the tower about 6 times without crashes. These are the places that crashed on me before unclicking the mp3 coding box. Sound is great without static or issues. This is the only fix that has worked for me.
In short, I installed myst masterpiece edition then quicktime lite and ONLY unclicked the MP3 coding box. After install, I loaded the game WITHOUT compatibilities and it ran without a hiccup. Hope this helps everyone with Win 7 64 bit.
