I run a Vista 64 bit system with the newest versions of Quicktime and iTunes..... (known to cause problems with disc versions of Myst).
I installed Myst from gog.com, but when I launch it in my admin account (clearning it through the UAC), it loads the low res black screen with the "thinking" mouse icon, and just stays there forever. These are not unlike the problems I had when trying to load my Myst Masterpiece from my disc... I was hoping gog/cyan resolved this before distribution of the digital version, but maybe not.
Possible culprits: vista, 64 bit OS, newer version of quicktime.
Ideas?
This question / problem has been solved by Glintimage
update: exe properties include compatibility for win 95, also I tried 640x480 and 256 color modes. Same exact result.
For now, I'm thinking it's the quicktime issue more than anything, which if it is, disappoints me considering how widespread this problem is and they released it without compatibility warnings on a website that is known for their remarkable record for making things compatible.
I just hope this is a temporary problem. I sure would love to play my game : )
Played the with compatibility settings under the shortcuts propertys?
lol.... just got to that update :D .... see above : )
Same problem on a 32bit Windows 7 system.
I tried all the compatibility properties and uninstalling Quicktime Alternative. Still does not work.
I unchecked the compatibility mode thingy. Runs fine now.
Good call Glint!!!
I did the same... turned off all compatability settings and it runs great... I was checking other things, and hitting the solution button when not directly near a puzzle led to a crash to desktop, but it runs.
Thanks for the fix Glint..... I'll be marking this post resolved--- at least it is for me :D
I'm running XP and it does the same, crashes on opening. However turning off compatibility settings didn't work, or at least the settings I saved did not stay checked after closing the window. Still crashes.
tallsasquatch...
give us some more details.... crashes to the desktop, or just freezes up the system until you ctl+alt+del and manually shut it down? Are you running XP 32 bit or 64? What settings under the compatibility tab are currently checked? Any? Do you get any sound or video or neither? Are you running iTunes/quicktime? (seems to not be the problem with this version, but I have to ask out of habit)
Thanks....we'll try to help you out.
I just installed on my 32 bit XP machine and I'm having the same problem taking it out of compatibility mode.... I think your 2 problems are related to that. I'll start a new thread specifically for compatibility XP problem.
My game does not load. When I run the exe file the screen goes black and for a split second I hear a sound like it is trying to play a video or music file but then it just crashes to desktop. I have tinkered with the compatibility settings and I still have had no success. I am running XP. I am also running the latest version of iTunes and QT. Also tried disabling my antivirus....no dice.
Update....Here is part of the error message that I get when the dialogue box asks me if I want to report the crash to Microsoft...
AppName: myst.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: quicktime.qts
ModVer: 6.3.0.17 Offset: 00237a8c

I installed Myst from GOG. When I start it, it changes my display settings just fine, but then gives the error message (in the Windows view) "Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working." Any help to fix this would be most appreciated.

This is the exact issue I'm having, too.
Making a new post, since this one is marked 'SOLVED.'

what are the "compatibility things"? thanks
I had the same problem on my netbook under Windows 7 32bit, but it had nothing to do with compatibility modes.
My Myst Masterpiece did not load because it required a resolution of 1024x768 that my netbook does not support.
Solution: Edit the registry to add 1024x768 as a compressed resolution http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?board_id=20&model=Eee%20PC%201000HE&id=20091227234712546&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
