I've recently developed an itch for classic adventure games, and figured I might as well start with Myst and Riven. However, I've seen a number of posts on the GoG formus discussing problems with these two games.
My question: I run Windows XP Professional 64-bit edition. Will I be able to run GoG's versions without any major problems? Also, will I have issues running Quicktime, given the version differences between what's available now and what the games were designed for? I'm not averse to doing some tweaking to get it working.

Hi, welcome to gog.
I'm running W7 64bit myself and i have the 4 games from the Myst series installed at this time and they are all working fine.
I didn't had to do any tweaking, other than apply specific compatibility settings to each of the games' shortcuts. In RealMyst's case i also had to change the 3D settings using the provided configuration tool but that was it.
Unlike the CD and DVD versions of Myst and Riven, i didn't have to mess around with quicktime files or downgrade my currenlty installed version of Quicktime, which is v 7.6.5 (518.40). All 4 games worked 'out of the box' so to speak.
Naturally, given the specificity of each machine in regards to hardware/software combination, i think no one can guarantee that you won't have to do a bit of tweaking or at least play around wiht the compatibility settings, but i see no reason why the games shouldn't work for you.

Hello, what are the compatiblity settiings that should be applied when using a Win7 64bit machine. I also am using an Ati 5770 video card via HDMI output. The game runs fine but no sound on my machine. All my drivers are up to date and quicktime most recent one. Thanks.

Hi,
Which Myst game ?

duggyhow: I'm sorry, that is Myst Masterpiece version from here. I was able to figure out the audio issue. It was playing thru my onboard soundcard fine, so I just hooked it up to my receiver. I am having lockups now in the library and sometimes when I turn around on the island. What should I set different as far as settings? Thanks.

-Disable Visual Themes
-Run as Admin

for some reason, it still locks up when I click that window in the library that changes shape. I'm not sure what's doing it. Thanks.

I'm not sure why it's locking up either. Maybe try XP SP2 or Win 98 compatibility mode instead of XP SP3.
I do not understand at all why this post is marked "solved". It is not solved. I have a Win 7 64 bit system, and I have done absolutely EVERYTHING in all of these forums, and CAN NOT get this game to work. Extremely frustrated by this whole thing.

I was experiencing the same audio issues as you guys, with all the settings mentioned on Windows 7 64-bit. I consulted the oracle (google) and came up with the following fix that completely worked for me:

Go to the Riven directory. For me it was C:/Program Files (x86)/GOG.com/Riven

Open the mohawk.w32 in wordpad.

Change fEnableAudioProxy=true to fEnableAudioProxy=false, then save.

WIth me, that fixed all the sound issues. There are still some animations missing, and Artimus's journal still flips 2 pages sometimes, but the game is playable now.

I'm not able to run the Myst Masterpiece game on Windows 7 64-Bit. I've tried the steps indicated above, and I get a black screen with audio. Any additional suggestions?

Thanks.
Don't Laugh: I am running Windows 8. I was able to get Riven to work successfully. Myst does not run. I can start it and get to the point where I am landed on the dock. But the first motion I try locks it up. I tried the various versions of quick time. Versions 7 and 6 give me the lock up mentioned. Version 5 does not get me much of anything. Any help you can give me will be much appreciated. wwy00

i'm new here and its already 2014 i'd like to buy all the myst games and play them on my machine which has windows 8.1 working (i hate this os on my laptop) wondering what sort of things you ran into with 8.1?
I was having the same problems with the black screen even after doing the steps above. I also have Windows 7 and I updated to Quicktime 7 and that fixed it for me.
I took Quicktime off my machine and have compatibility set to XP SP2. Don't even use admin to start it. it works great. Set the settings to where i like them and use advanced settings.
