I just bought Myst: Masterpiece Edition and Riven. Both games work, except for the intros and book videos. I've set my security software so that it doesn't interfere with the game.
My specs are:
-- Windows XP 64 bit Professional Edition SP2
-- Intel Core i7-920
-- EVGA GTX285 2GB
-- 6GB DDR3-1600
I don't have Quicktime or iTunes installed. I'm guessing that's why the intros/book videos don't work. Which version of QT should I grab?
Thanks for any help.

Hi,
I already had the current version of Quicktime & iTunes before installing MME and Riven, and videos (intros, books, etc) are working fine in both games.
I'm on win7 64 bit and my rig is identical to yours (i7-920, Asus GTX295, 6GB DDR3)
Maybe try the current version of Quicktime ?

I just grabbed the newest version of QuickTime. I'm running version 7.65.17.80. I've also played with the Myst executable compatibility settings. I've tried too many combinations to list, but none of them enabled me to see the intros/book videos, even with the latest version of QT. Is there anything else I can try? I've looked around at the other forum posts and attempted suggestions there (mostly relating to compatibility settings), but nothing worked there, either.

How about Riven ? Are the videos working ?
I set the Riven executable to Windows 95 compatibility mode and checked "Disable visual themes" and the intros work just fine, although I only tested up to the part where you get released from the cage at the beginning. I used these same settings for Myst: Masterpiece Edition, but the intros/book videos won't play there.

Ok, so QT is working and the problem seems to be specific to MME.
Try win98 compatibility.
One question, why are you on XP SP2 and not SP3 ? There isn't SP3 for XP 64bit ?

I've tried the Win98 compatibility mode, along with all possible combinations of the "Settings" checkboxes for that mode, with the same result. Also, Microsoft never released an SP3 for XP 64bit, so we're all stuck with SP2.
I'm comfortable editing the registry, so I took a look at the GOG settings in this thread here: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/myst_series/read_first_soludtion_to_locked_compatibility_mode_and_audio_video_stutter
The settings stored in the registry match what I set in the Properties pane for the Myst executable, so I know that the compatibility mode changes I make are definitely being applied to the exe.
This is getting to be an "interesting" problem...
EDIT: In order to test to see if the book videos are working, I'm going to the wood paneled library room, inserting the blue page in the corresponding book, then opening it. All I get is a black square where the video should play.

When you start the game, do you see the intro ? In the dock forechamber, can you see what's displayed in the imager when you insert the codes ?
And yeah, 'interesting' problem.
All your other stuff is updated ? Drivers, DirectX, etc ?
When I start the game, I go straight to a screen of the Myst book lying on the ground, with an all-black, starry background on the top half of the screen. I click the book and it opens. I can see the Myst Island panel on the right. I click it and end up on the dock.
I assume the dock forechamber is the room immediately to the left, when you arrive. I input each of the three codes into the panel behind the paper and checked the imager. The attached JPEG is what I saw after I input the codes and hit the button on the base of the imager. Sound plays, but that's all I see. (That screenshot happens to be for code 40, but I see the same thing regardless of the code I put in. The sound that plays is different for each code though.)
As for updates, DXDiag reports that I'm running DirectX 9.0c, version 4.09.0000.0904. My GPU drivers, were updated as of 9-27-09, so they're about 3 months old. I'll update them later tonight.

Yep, you're not getting all the videos all right. You're missing the Red Orb and Cyan logo intros and the intro where Atrus falls through Riven's Star fissure. And you're also missing the images on the imager in the dock forechamber.
I had that problem too, on Win7, but disabling visual themes combined with XP compatibility solved the issue.
Update your drivers and if you're still having problems after that, contact support with a description of the issue and your DxDiag.
I'll post back if i think of anything else that might help.

I just tried XP compatibility and disabling visual themes. I then updated my drivers to the most recent ForceWare release. Unfortunately, neither one worked. I'll generate my DxDiag and file a ticket with support.
Thanks a lot for all your help.

You're welcome, i'm sorry it still isn't working for you.
I filed a support ticket with GoG back on January 28th. Less than 24 hours later, I got a response from one of GoG's support techs. He suggested that I remove the game and Quicktime and try using either Quicktime Alternative 3.1 or an older version of Quicktime with Myst: Masterpiece Edition. I attempted both of these solutions the same day, unfortunately, with no success in getting the videos and animations to play.
On January 29th, I replied to him with this information, along with some other things I was going to try, specifically, seeing if placing the programs on the same hard drive partitions would resolve my issue. I received no response. I then waited until February 4th, when I followed up with the negative results of my above mentioned attempt.
I have yet to receive a response. I'm really quite disappointed with GoG, as everyone who I've spoken to recommended them, mostly based on the excellent quality of their customer service and technical support. I'm hoping this is just an oversight, as there are other games I would like to purchase. Has anyone else had a problem with GoG not responding to their request for technical support?
I seem to be having the same problem as the OP. None of the QT videos play. And then when I got to the clocktower and used a lever, the game crashed on me.
I've updated quicktime to the latest version, but have tried setting different compatibility modes (W95 and W98), but no go.
I'll keep looking into it though.
EDIT: Ok, tried all the different quicktime versions that the support article linked to and no change. Tried running in Windows 95 and 98 compatibility and no change. Videos still won't play. Could it be because I'm running Windows XP 64-bit? I know that some games don't like that OS.

I got this running by running the setup (this is for realMyst, I'm guessing the other version has a setup program too?)...under 3d hardware select a setting with Direct3D HAL by itself without T&L!
I also did the program compatabily change to run as WIN XP...I'm running Window 7 64 bit and this solved the problem.
