Okay, so this new GOG Masterpiece Edition is supposed to run great on Windows 7, 64-bit. I have Windows 7, 64-bit. I set administrator privileges and run it in Windows XP mode. Works great, except every now and then it freezes. So I have to save every time I do anything at all, which is a major pain, but then all I have to do is terminate the frozen game with Task Manager, come back in, reload the game, and continue on my way. It has gotten me through the Selenitic, Stoneship, and Mechanical Ages JUST FINE, and I was happy enough. But now that I'm in Channelwood, I can only go so far. Any time I move the wrong way or move to fast or end up in a certain place at the wrong moment, the game freezes. Saving is good, but I can't get past where I am. I've crashed 10 or 12 times and have had it. And the elevators should work at this point, but they don't. I've read all the posts, but for the most part, there doesn't seem to be anything new you can try with GOG Masterpiece Edition once you've gotten most of the way through the game and get stuck with crashing.

Has anyone else at all gotten this far in the game and found this problem with Channelwood?

The game hasn't frozen once for me and last night I completed Channelwood with zero problems.

You might want to try running in regular Windows 7 mode, but with Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode set on the EXE. Good luck!

I gave up in Channelwood my first time around -- The 2nd go-round I was going to save every-other step but ended up having the game freeze before I could even do that. I re-installed but am still having problems. I hope all of us who are dissatisfied with the quality of this game speak up -- waaaayyy too many problems. And not all of us are computer geeks who can go into obscure areas and fix things. I am sorely disappointed in this game (on the other hand, 11th Hour is working great...)

Myst is crashing for me as well (in Windows 7, though, I can check later if it also crashes in Wine on Ubuntu). Everything was fine until I got to Stoneship and now progressing any further is near impossible.

So where do we go from here? Is GOG known for helping to fix problems, or is it such an old game that we are hopelessly lost?


Does anyone know if RealMyst has the same story line, and is basically identical to Myst Masterpiece Edition (except for the "3d part" of course).

The story in realMyst is exactly the same as in Myst and Myst Masterpiece Edition and there's actually an extra, but small, Age - Rime.

Well, the good news is I finished Myst. I finally got past Stoneship (though, continuously saving and restoring games grew quite tedious) had a few crashes in Channelwood. After that, the crashes seemed to disappear (other than the occasional lock-up just as I would save the game, but it seemed to restore just fine)

And for reference, I followed these instructions (http://www.gog.com/en/support/myst_masterpiece_edition/crashing_video_playback_issues_or_other_visual_glitches) as well as tested the game in various compatibility modes, but neither made any difference to the lock ups. Thanks! I'll make sure to play though that one as well.

I probably should have read this thread BEFORE buying, huh? I'm having similar issues.

Alright... aside from the odd crash in Channelwood, my real issue started in the Mechanical age, which I did last. The rotation simulator worked fine, however the actual tower rotation would only "clang" and "tong", there were no "pink" or "spring" sounds to be had. I could not get to island with the first two symbols of the code. I accessed the Myst book by process of elimination and vague memory to get the hell outta there and finish the game.

I was having major problems running Myst Masterpiece on Windows 7 64-bit as well. I tried many different versions of QuickTime and many different compatibility modes, but nothing worked. Finally, I decided to give it a shot WITHOUT using compatibility mode and that was the solution.

So, to sum up, I'm using QuickTime version 7.7.2 with both the audio and video in safe mode, and I'm running Myst without checking "Run this program in compatibilty mode for" or "Run this program as an administrator". The only thing that I have checked is "Disable visual themes". I've made it through the whole game and only had two crashes in the Stoneship age.

The problem of not being able to get the tower rotation to land on North or West in the Machanical age is a known issue with MME for Windows and is not the fault of gog. However, it IS possible to get the tower to land on North after many repeated attempts.

What makes this edition a masterpiece? I mean the bonus content is only a manual. I'm looking forward to play it though.

Myst Masterpiece Edition is an improved version of the original Myst.

My understanding is that the original source assets were used to rerender the scenes using updated technology, in much the same way that an album (music) would be remastered from the original recordings. Masterpiece Edition maintains the prerendered point and click format of the original, whereas Real Myst adapts the game to a 3d engine.

I've had problems also. I've concluded that the issues I've had are related to corrupt saved games. For example, in Channelwood, I'd opened the gate to the spiral staircase. When I reloaded the saved game to continue, the gate was shut, and when I approached the gate the game forze up. When I looked around, I found puzzles I'd solved were no longer solved. Think something is up with the way the game is saving the game data. I'm making progress, but limiting my saves to known good saves.

The original game game was rendered in 8 bits (256 colors) whereas the Masterpiece Edition is rendered is 24 bits (true colors). And there were a few other changes such as improved animations and sounds and the addition of a help system (which IMHO is detrimental to the game).
