One aspect of this game which is SERIOUSLY enraging me is arriving at a town and finding myself attacked by robbers. I have 50-80 men in my party, but I guess I keep giving them the night off or something? Because somehow, there I am, all by myself, against several robbers. It's idiotic.

Furthermore, it's getting worse. At first it was one, then two, then three, and just now I walked into a village and was swarmed by FIVE robbers. It's ridiculous. Is there a way to shut this off? Prevent it from happening?
Again, just now. Five more robbers.
I guess it is there to force you to invest in personal combat stats and gear for fighting on foot too. Using ranged I find the robbers easy if you can find some partial cover.
I am winning the fights. It's just a pain in the butt, and I'm wondering how many more I'll have to fight at a time if this keeps up.
The M&B games are all about fighting, making a few strategic and lots of tactical choices with a tiny bit of economy thrown in.

Just don't enter the towns between evening and dawn, except to rest. Also, if you run Diplomacy plus mod, it lets one of your companions enter town with you IIRC.
Fragonard, it happened to me once in daylight as well. And if you load a save and enter the town again, it happens again. Lately I just save before entering a town and if it happens, load the save and go somewhere else.

It's never happened to me in daylight in 1000s of hours. It can happen at dawn though which looks like daylight on the world map but really isn't. They didn't handle this well,

This really pissed me off when I first started playing, but it actually gets easier as you get further into the game - though I speak only for the Viking Reforged Edition (haven't bothered with standard M&B:W since the Viking expansion adds so much). That said, for all I know the below could be true for stock M&B:W as well.

Firstly, combat skills make a significant difference once you get beyond 140 or so.

Secondly, better equipment helps a bit - especially better armor as the damage you take is significantly reduced.

Finally - and most importantly - your followers (the individual NPCs you can recruit, level up and equip) will actually fight by your side in these encounters, unlike the "regular" soldiers. Actually without these guys you'd have to be really really good or have crazy-high stats coupled with high-end armor to win these events.

What pisses me off even with tons of followers and decent skills are those crappy missions where you have to locate a bandit lair and raid it. For some retarded reason, you are limited to a maximum of about 6-7 troops with you, even though the number of enemies increase as your level goes higher. For some even more retarded reason not all enemies are actually on the map at the start, but instead they respawn in areas that you've previously cleared! Usually they respawn right behind you as you're heading towards another group!

Luckily there are mods to fix this (and also the "bandits attacking in town" thing). I'd recommend checking them out - e.g. for Viking Reforged edition the "VC Tweaks Tool" is worth looking into as it potentially fixes a bunch of things (and its easy to customise).
Must be a version difference, squid830, because I am always alone when it happens despite having 8 companions in my party, and I'm matched against as many as 5 at a time.
It is a good idea to state which game you are talking about since there are several :-) In the first game you are always alone, true.
Cheat/adjustment tool TweakMB gives you an option to be always accompanied by a few companions.

But also, the game is FULL of stuff like that, at some point you're assaulting a castle and in the end you and a buddy wil have to clear the throne room of a dozen defenders or it's a failed assault. So.. my advice would be to take those robbers as a learning experience. You NEED to be able to whack them off casually. Weapon skills and good armor are of much help.

Now I see why you are "censored". =D
The town fights aren't too bad. I switch to sword and shield right away and run around the corner away from the archers. They tend not to follow you, for the most part. Once safe, switch back to your ranged weapon and peek around the corner to pick them off one by one. The village fights can be tougher since cover is a little harder to get to. But same thing applies - the ranged guys normally don't follow you.

One oddity is that a vendor booth is treated like a solid wall, even though you can see right through it - you can't shoot each other so long as either of you is "blocked" by one of the sides of the booth.

For the fight in the keep, ouch. Don't think I've ever managed to win that one. One of these days...

I probably should have mentioned I'm pretty much exclusively playing Viking module. It seems that they've made town fights less annoying in that.
