porjay: As you know the Mortal Kombat Kollection (released on steam & consoles) is the arcade ports but it has Games for Windows Live baked into it. GoG's stance on DRM should clearly show why they didn't offer this one and chose to offer the DOS versions instead.
There are way more problems with Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection (now renamed to Mortal Kombat Kollection) than just GFWL. Most notably controller and sound problems where music just stops playing at some points.
From what I know the best choice would be the versions from Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition. It still has problems but is the closest to arcade as it gets right now.

Neonshuffler: The arcade versions where harder in order to eat your money and make you put more money into the machine all the home versions on pc and consoles where easier. That is the only real difference. Of course the sound is going to be a bit shit but the arcades had proper speaker set up where as most pcs at the time had shitty little speakers with no sub.

If you want the best version with sounds and visuals for the original mortal kombat the sega mega cd version was better even then the arcade version. IT was a master piece. I still have that on cd and played through it last year.

tinyE: Sega Mega CD? I've seen PC collections of Genesis games, in fact I have one, but never any with any of the MK games on them.
O man you are missing out then. http://www.sega-mag.com/jeux/cover/MegaCD/Mortal+Kombat-MegaCD-EUR.jpg

I had mk 1 on mega cd and mk 3 on mega drive.

Ah ha, so it's not for a PC. That's why I haven't seen it.

tinyE: What exactly are the differences? I know the DOS sucks but I've never heard why but for the shit music.

You gotta be kidding. I still own my copy of the Sega CD version too, but it's not a masterpiece. It's the Genesis version with blood enabled, intro character videos, mixed up CD recorded music tracks from the arcade, and LOAD TIMES before battles, fatalities, and Shang Tsung morphs. Also lacking a lot of sound effects and animations, smaller sprites etc.

It was still fun to play though.

It also carried over the omission of Lui Kang's statue in the Warrior Shrine, in favor of having BOTH Sub-Zero and Scorpion statues.

Now, if you want to talk about a Sega CD masterpiece, that would be Eternal Champions, did you happen to own that one on Sega CD?

The cabinet at the local arcade might have been damaged then as the mega cd version was far better through the sound system. Also thought it looked better. I guess I am wrong ahahaha.

Never herd of Eternal Champions.

Had a bunch of sega mega cd games though. Dune on the mega cd is what I flog the most.

Seriously get Eternal Champions CD, it's incredibly good of you like old 2D fighters. You can dig up an ISO image at several dumps around the web. It's really unfortunate that it was never released anywhere since, and even the Genesis version was left out of the Sonic Megadrive/Genesis Collection as it was an M rated game.
Will try and track it down.

Edward_Carnby: DOS version is the most accurate port of the arcade version in terms of graphics and gameplay ( as far as I know ) & I think gog made the right choise , 'cause "Arcade Collection" is awful .
avatar
EvilDobermann: Why? Because of the difficulty?

I own the Arcade Kollection in Steam and played through it. I found it to be a pain. I didn't play the original three Mortal Kombats when I was younger, only Mortal Kombat Trilogy which I enjoyed a lot. The Arcade Kollection with its cheap AI ruined the single player for me. When these DOS version are more balanced AI wise I'd even consider buying the games again.
AK is just one hell of a bug .

Missing sprites , fixed resolution , blury graphic , messed up control ( which I can't change from the game - only if I edit config files ) , broken AI etc etc ...

And the worst - GFWL .

DOS versions ( for me ) - greatest versions , except , of course , arcade original .

The AI in Arcade Kollection was the same as the arcades. That version had a lot of issues but AI was not one of them.

PC version has 5 difficulty settings. The hardest is basically arcade version, but there are 4 easier ones.

Hmmm , it's a good chance that u're right .

If it is so - my apologize .

But AK still have a lot of other issues .

nice avatar (Xavier from Eternal Champions)
Are the Fatalities different for the DOS version? I'm having a lot of trouble with MK 1 here. The other two I could never get down regardless. :P

I just use my ps3 controller and the program motioninjoy and set up keyboard keys to the controller. Then no worries.
