Ah bugger, these are the lame DOS versions which I happen to loathe... Wish I had known this prior to buying them. Any way for me to get my money back or does the 30 Day Money Back Guarantee only apply to games that don't function properly on a particular system?

I'd suggest at least trying it you really aren't happy with your purchase. GOG should have put a NOTE about these versions being DOS on the right side, I think.

Thanks for your reply, tfishell.

As a matter of fact, I'm quite unhappy with my purchase. Really couldn't be bothered with them on my DOS machine back in the old days. I have given them another chance just now though but, no, they're proper pish in my not so humble opinion.

Back to my original question, is a refund possible?
What exactly are the differences? I know the DOS sucks but I've never heard why but for the shit music.

To be fair, for the most part they're pretty much the same as the arcade versions (though the hardcore fans of the series will probably tell you the devil is in the details) but the music and controls just ruin it for me.
Interesting, I was excited to see these are the DOS versions, as they are the ones truly hard to get nowadays.
What are the issues then?
For other keyboard-only fighting games I use joy2key and works like a charm. I suppose you know it, but in case you not, try it. It gets a lot better.
I'm curious: does the AI cheat just as badly in the DOS versions, particularly MK2? Is there any version where it doesn't?

If you don't know what I'm about, start a tournament and instead of Fatalities, try throwing your enemies. Do that until you can't ;)

The arcade versions where harder in order to eat your money and make you put more money into the machine all the home versions on pc and consoles where easier. That is the only real difference. Of course the sound is going to be a bit shit but the arcades had proper speaker set up where as most pcs at the time had shitty little speakers with no sub.

If you want the best version with sounds and visuals for the original mortal kombat the sega mega cd version was better even then the arcade version. IT was a master piece. I still have that on cd and played through it last year.

DOS version is the most accurate port of the arcade version in terms of graphics and gameplay ( as far as I know ) & I think gog made the right choise , 'cause "Arcade Collection" is awful .

And yes , hellish difficulty of MK II is here too ...

Sega Mega CD? I've seen PC collections of Genesis games, in fact I have one, but never any with any of the MK games on them.
In terms of gameplay fidelity and graphics, the DOS versions were the best of the original ports.

These ports are easier than the arcade originals up to a certain point. For instance, in MK2, it's quite easy to progress up to Kintaro (whereas in the arcade version, I have trouble early on even at the easiest setting), at which point cheeseball exploits are required to beat the game.

The recent Arcade Kollection contains emulated versions of the original games. However, there are slowdown issues (especially on Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3), making it worse in some ways. Personally, I'm glad that the DOS ports are available again, even if they're less than ideal.

While these are not the arcade versions, the DOS ports are the next best thing to the arcade versions in terms of accuracy to the source material. The graphics are a bit lowered, the speed is a wee bit slower, and the sound is a bit different, but these are the best home ports of the time that are good short of emulating the games in MAME. The Arcade Kollection exists but considering how it is suggested to emulate the games in MAME instead of playing that thanks to odd sound issues, slowdown, and of course GFWL... this is kind of a godsend in comparison.

As for joypad issues, you can fiddle with DOSBox's joystick settings but if that does not work, simply use a joy to key emulator to map the keyboard to your gamepad. DOSBox has a built in one you can fiddle with but if that does not work then joy2key or Xpadder work perfectly fine. Highly suggest Xpadder personally, it works like a charm.

I would assume Xpadder only works with an Xbox controller?

I asked this is another thread but isn't that much pounding likely to kill a keyboard?
