I can't get this mod to work with the CD-ROM version of the game.... I can install it and the game runs fine--but none of the changes that should be there are present...for instance...suppress disease & suppress poison spells are still there, the guy in the Vertigo jail selling the thievery skill is not present, etc.

waltc: Odd. First order of business: When you unzipped the files, did you overwrite the old files with the new ones? Test that.

The GOG.com version works perfectly.

You can ask the author (ludmeister@jeffludwig.com) about this since he should know more.

I searched for "Download World of Xeen" and found some abandonware sites hosting the game. If you already own the game legally, try using one of these versions with the mod.

I learned that one thing that changed between versions was the savegame format, it changed to the .wox format from the floppy version (.sav?), and I noticed on Jeff's site that his screen shots are all of the floppy version--which is why I reached the conclusion that maybe the mod wasn't working with the Gog CD-ROM version...which is what I have. (I recall the first version Gog sold was the floppy-based version.)

Yes, I actually went into the directories and renamed the original files and then copied Jeff's over. Checked this several times, in fact--the game runs and loads save games just fine, but none of the changes in Jeff's mod are present. I even started a new game from scratch, went to the jail--no one there offering the thieving skill--the suppress skills are still being offered, etc.

I should email him as I'm really not interested in playing the original floppy version for several reasons. Oh, well...thanks anyway...I thought you might know something right off the tip of your tongue...;)

What are the main differences between the floppy and CD versions?

CD version has fully voiced speech. And it works somewhat slower from my observations. There's no other extras or alterations (except some adjustments to file format) apart from more voice.

Yes, it may well be that the difference in savegame formats is enough to derail the mod. I've emailed Jeff about this, but I rather doubt I'll hear from him for awhile, if ever...;) Hope so, though....

GOG's version now includes BOTH the original floppy version and the newer CD version. So you could try the floppy version when running this mod. I believe there are separate shortcuts to each version after you install the game (or maybe these are only start menu shortcuts, not necessarily desktop shortcuts).

I can confirm that GOG's MM1-6 versions include the CD and floppy versions of World of Xeen. These two versions are separate programs and saved data is not shared between the versions.

The GOG CD version is finnicky when changing sides of the world, or effectively changing CDs. I've pushed Control-F4 and (then) Enter as prompted, but only when alt-tabbing out then in do I see progress... sometimes. (You may need to play in windowed mode for this to work.) Other times, the game freezes. How to fix this?

I'm going to reinstall this, then, because all I got--or thought I got, was a single directory with two differing shortcuts to different launchers, one with speech and one without. I could well have missed something, though! See what happens and get back...;)

Yes, indeedy! Thanks guys, for making me look just a bit harder! The old version is indeed packed inside the same folders with the CD version...;) The CD version is contained in the image files Game1.gog and Game2.gog (CD 1 & 2); whereas the regular non-speech version is played through the regular WoX files in the same folder. Rather ingenious method, if I may say so. I was playing the CD version but the changes I was making via Jeff's mod were affecting only the floppy version of the game...so *no wonder they didn't affect the game in any way*!

Yep....Jeff's mod is working fine with the floppy version. looking very nice so far and seems to play noticeably faster, for some reason. I do keep getting the odd lockup here and there, but I'm confident I can work that out!

Edit: Even though I've managed to separate the CD-ROM version from the floppy version, and installed Jeff's mod in the floppy version, things are still weird. For one thing, the floppy version keeps locking up at various places--such as hitting the "exit" button when in the Vertigo magic shop (Heather's Hexes, or something like that.) As soon as I hit the key to exit--immediate lock up. Game has locked up in several other places as well, forcing a CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the task manager and kill the dosbox application. Also, with the floppy version, in viewing the game's opening animation, the game locks up every single time at the same place, and it doesn't matter at all what sort of output I select in the .conf file--d3d, ddraw, overlay, surface, whatever--it always locks at the same place with differing error messages.

This does not happen with the CD-ROM version, and I don't get the in-game lockups. Obviously, during the span of time between the floppy version release and the CD-ROM release, some serious bug fixing went on in the game code--aside from the obvious differences we've talked about.

I'll keep working with the floppy version as I have a few more tricks I can try--but if they don't work I'll be sticking with the CD-ROM version exclusively from now on....

Weird stuff all around, eh?...;) When I go CTRL-F4-Enter it always works perfectly, first time...;) You need to be holding down CTRL when you hit F4, and you need to be holding down both CTRL & F4 when you hit Enter (hitting the keys sequentially doesn't work.) Maybe that's what's been causing you a problem there....(game instructions are not at all clear on that point.)

This is (usually) due to a misconfiguration in the Sound Blaster settings, specifically the IRQ. Xeen will be trying to use an IRQ for Sound Blaster that is different than the IRQ DosBox is emulating. Check the DosBox configuration file you are using; I think OOB GoG install of Xeen wants IRQ 7, DMA 1, and HDMA 5:

If it will help, I had same problem with original WoX when I've run it on more modern OS, game locking up on some NPC's speech (and during intro if I didn't skip it). Didn't have problem with GOG version, I am not sure if I changed it manually, for me it is:

I might've messed a bit with memory settings. Just in case, attaching dosbox config I have. Just change the file extension from *.jpg to .conf and copy to your WoX install replacing the original .conf.
